Hello fellow redusers.....

One of our western digital MYBOOK 4T external drives was wiped by accident and I have not touched it since, Its one of those fat versions that has 2 disc inside and I assume it was raided 0 which
is even more of a concern. (see attached pic)

ANyway, any of you tech gurus out there know if you format a drive like this...is there some type of magic potion, software ie redundead...but to restore harddrives that have been deleted?

Can someone please tell me if I am Sh#* out of luck here...I greatly appreciate anyones feedback in the matter.

cheers!

Clay

First.

you need a drive large enough to recover too as you can not recover data to the same drive.

second

do not do anything until you run the data recovery program

third,

if you are on a Mac you can try wondershare data recovery. I used it last week with great success. If you did an erase most data will be there. Follow the instructions to a T

Huumm if it's a raid 0 I'm not sure wondershare would work.
For mac OS maybe data rescue X.
Good luck Clayton.

Yeah thats my concern....I have the data back up elsewhere but spread across drives and continents, restoring this will just save me a world of time. Thanks Brice.

Whatever you do, do not interupt or cancel the recovery process, it's kind of a one shot deal, so breathe and take your time, have the shot of whiskey AFTER its done.

Loving my a Leica R glass btw, I know you are an R fan.

It's going to depend on what's actually failed. If it's the hardware RAID controller, then the drives might be OK if you transplant them (keeping them in the same order!) into another identical Mybook enclosure.

However, if it's one of the drives, then any recovery software attempt might corrupt/write onto the drives and destroy the stripe. Unless the recovery software you use mounts them READ ONLY and is RAID aware, this is a concern.

Commercial hard drive recovery firms will usually attempt to hardware clone the drives first, preferably to the same make, model and size of drives, and then attempt recovery from the clones. Continuing to power up and run the damaged drives risks making any data corruption/loss worse and unrecoverable. Some hard disk docking stations will do a hardware bit for bit clone without any intervention from a computer or OS, which is good as then there's no chance of hidden system files being written to the drives. But then because there's no computer involvement, there's no way of monitoring if the clone was successful.

So it's all a bit swings and roundabouts. At least there are some backups somewhere!

Thanks for the warning Eric! Although...I have already started a wonderlost raw recovery and it appears to have already located 300 gigs of data...but it wont retain the file names, so what could be .r3Ds are being renamed maybe as .mov. Is there a program that will rename your R3D files or deal with corrupt R3Ds?? Well looks like there is 75% to go and possible another 2 days of recovering crunching.

Best

There is a program called "a better finder rename". This allows you to batch rename files, extensions, etc.

after this pass, you could try to run redundead on the volume to recover r3ds.
