Hi guys, here are some shots from a commercial we shot over in India a couple of months ago. Shot on Epic with Nikon primes.

Some more grabs up here - http://piersmcgrail.blogspot.ie/2013/02/screen-grabs-from-trocaire.html.

May I ask what Nikon primes (older AI/AIS or the newer stuff)? Also did you use any filtration and can you discuss the lighting (was there any)?

When can we see this in motion; it looks incredible.

EDIT: Shot of the Dude herding the goats is my favourite, followed by the person sweeping the doorway above.

Hey Mike, they were older Nikons - Nikkor/AI, bit of a mixed bunch but certainly not the newer ones. No filtration and no artificial light - I had one assistant and the whole crew was four strong [plus we had to fly all the gear over from Ireland, which cut down on our options!].

Thanks Mark! They went with a slightly less contrasty grade in the end but I prefer my own ;)

Should be able to post the finished piece in the next day or so...

That's ridiculous. Would you have any before/after of any of those shots? Pretty crazy for natural light (did you at least use bounce, scrims, anything?) What about a fog machine? I (along with everyone) love light streaks through smoke/fog/dust.

EDIT: Off topic, but I noticed that the one thing you didn't shoot on RED (K+V - Alexa) got a number of notable mentions for cinematography... What gives? Was it prettier than the rest? Did you light it differently/better? Were you able to get "more" out of Alexa?... Or did it just find a larger audience?

Don't have before and afters, but our biggest trick was that we shot only at either end of the day, so most of the shots have a nice low sun. We shot over three days so we could afford to be selective with our time, and luckily the weather was completely continuous [and clear]. As Bob mentioned there are are plenty of natural phenomenons there that aid the photography - the dustiness, for example - which worked as our fog machine! The only bounce source we used was a small lasolite, which we only really used in one or two shots, none of which are in the grabs.

K+V was my first feature which is currently doing the festival circuit, and as a result is getting reviewed. My other projects are generally short and commercial work, which people tend not to write about - so wider audience, yes. As an aside, having worked with the Alexa a few times now I find both cameras are extremely similar in terms of the image that you can get from them, but if pushed I would probably pick the Epic [that's from an aesthetic point of view, ignoring other concerns].

Man... Piers... the master of grading haha. Great looking piece. Those old Nikons flare really nice. Kinda like Super Speeds.
