Picked up a Microsoft Surface Pro today. Surprisingly great results. Real-time playback of 5K footage at 1/2 resolution (15 second bursts) or consistent at 1/4 grade.

USB 3.0 port allowed me to dump R3D's directly onto the Surface from a MINI REDMAG reader. Also back up to removable mini-SDXC 64 GB memory cards or back out to an external USB 3.0 drive (tested with Porsche 3 TB).

Quite the little machine. MiniDisplayPort out also allows for HDMI/VGA/DVI/MDP viewing.

Too bad the Surface Pro doesn't have nearly enough storage that it should.

I was wondering how well the Surface would support applications. This is awesome!

All you have to do is add a (cheap) 64GB high-speed SD card and you've increased it's storage capacity to 192GB. Try that with an iPad.

You can also attach a hard drive to the USB3 port, so it's possible to work with a lot of R3D footage, but you have to shuffle a bit because there's only the *one* USB3 port. The other is USB2.

I'll stick to the DIT Cart ;-)

Ha, yes. Don't get me wrong -- definitely not a main tool for DIT's. But a great demo, review, presentation, and 'fun' platform none-the-less. Very impressed with these.

Yep, runs Steam and full games too. Had a good bout on Age of Empires and Civilization 5. Username: provok (no 'e' at end)

What the hell; surface is getting an i7? I used one the other day for the first time and fell in love with the "switch to desktop" mode. Ive been saying it since i first used an iphone, but every smartphone and tablet should have the ability to go into an OS (lite) mode.

Surface Pro is intriguing, most promising new product from Microsoft in a long time. Actually, I'm liking Win8 as a tablet OS -- more so than the ho-hum Android tablets out there. Only thing I have to say about the Surface Pro that I learned in the time I've played with one... Better keep that power adapter and extension cord handy.

Yep, the thing is a battery burner. Definitely not iToy kind of battery life. More like the last PC notebook computer I owned. A few hours.

Although Microsoft has made an intriguing statement about that:

Would be interesting to see if Premier Pro could be loaded on this...

Yep. It's a full Windows 8 computer, in touch screen tablet form. Runs Premiere Pro CS6 without a hiccup. Anything you can install on a "full blown" Windows 8 machine you can also install on this. Performance of course scales with hardware, but considering its size and portability, this thing is a little monster.
