  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Old Angenieux zoom lens 25-250mm 1:3.2

I have one. It's quite nice.

The pros are price, flexible focal lengths, size - which is rather compact for a zoom with these flexible focal lengths, and its unique antique-y look. The breathing is surprisingly not terrible.

The cons are it's a little soft on both ends, and it has a unique antique-y look which makes it hard to match to other lenses. It doesn't cover 5K, although you get full coverage at 4K - but it vignettes between 25-32mm at 5K. And it's a telescoping lens which makes adding a mattebox tricky - you need a clip on and you need to operate it carefully because of the movement. And the lens element will not take take screw ins. So you have to finesse the filtering a bit.

Also its age - some of these are over 30 years old and, unless they are recently serviced, you are taking the risk of buying a very old lens and its attendant mechanical issues. I bought one and the gasket which hold the front lens element rotted away after I bought it. It cost me a pretty penny to restore the lens, because the part was unavailable except by scavenging from an old lens - so the repair was not cheap, though my lens is now as good as new.

You will want to know how recently it was serviced and checked out by a lens pro.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Meryem!
Very useful your advice.
What is the diameter of the front lens? Clamp MB is possible?
Is the only lens I would use for a docu-style! is a good compromise?
Alternatively I have a set canon L zoom (16-35 II, 24-70 II, 70-200, 24-105, 100-400),
but I will be in difficult conditions to change lenses.

Meryem.

Did you go the ARRI B - PL Adaptor route to make the lens fit your camera or did you have a custom PL mount made? If you did custom, I would be interested in some design details, dimensions etc.. The example I own does not have the standard ARRI universal adaptor but a two-piece arrangement with the ARRI B portion attached with captive screws. It is fine with a PL adaptor but not as secure as I would like. The stainless ARRI B section protrudes rearwards of the PL shoulder which also rules out using it on a 7D the way it is.

I have one and it is in perfect condition, checked by Visual Products.

The front diameter is 110mm.
I use round 4 1/2" filters with it when not using a clip-on mattebox with 4x5.65 filters.

Nice vintage look to it. The most compact X10 zoom on the market I think.
Stop down and it looks more modern.

Actually I own two, just to make sure to get the best out of them. They both behave very much the same, one having a slightly different coating than the other( B or T). Both are equiped with a universal mount and a screw on PL. The best way for filters is the old fashioned screw mount with 4 1/2 round retaining rings and a shade. They have strong fringing, the focus
at the edges falls to the background in wide angle, they bloom heavy with a a small area of no bloom around 200mm and have a small image circle, but still they track great, are very
sharp in the center after 5.6, they are the only 10X non suportable zooms and have the most beautiful flares You will ever get. The lateral fringing can be corrected in post, other than
that, I find it to be the most painterly and glassy lens out there. Technically almost every thing is better, but on an organic level its one of a kind.

George and Rolf many thanks!

Sorry for my bad english, but you recommended filters that are screwed directly on top lens; and shade screwed to filter?
No adapter o MB?
The lens I want to buy is not equipped with shade:
what brand of filters do you recommend and where can I find shade? (preferably in europe)

Ok, what I want is a long zoom vintage style with his defects...that give it a unique look that I searched! no post fx.

I have a kit Chrosziel 450W-20 carbon fiber and filter Tiffen ND+POLA+......
Is a purchase that you advise me? lens+filters+shade.

All good posts. I use a homemade sunshade for mine, so I don't have good clip on recommendations. But I can tell you one thing which might be useful - it doesn't work with the RED clip on mattebox, which I own. The 114mm ring is a shade too small to the lens, and the next size up is too big - so don't go that route. Which is too bad, because the RED mattebox is very good, as clip-ons go.

Hi!

114mm should work on the Angenieux 25-250mm T3.9...

Any clip-on mattebox with this rear opening should work. Mine works!

I also use a 110mm to 4 1/2" clip-on adapter with 4 1/2" filters and 4 1/2" retaining rings, and a 4 1/2" rubber shade.
Tiffen is a good brand for that.

all I can say is....mine does not. it's just a hair too tight - believe me, I wish it did....just trying to spare Stefano from a purchasing mistake. your mileage may vary.
