I'm looking for a decent, relatively cheap place I can give fellow Redusers access to some test files. The files will be ProRes and Avid DNxHD, so not ultra small files. I need to bypass Vimeo and Youtube or any other place that will re-encode the video. This needs to support lots of bandwidth in case a lot of people download the files.

Any thoughts on what is good for this circa 2013.

Thanks guys!

Thanks guys!

I guess my two biggest concerns are security - some of the footage I'll be sharing is not something I'd want in the wrong hands. And since this is test footage, i'd rather not spend a lot. I'm looking into the options you guys have posted.

Have to admit, the Amazon one has me scratching my head a bit about the pricing. I get the concept of buckets and storing objects in the buckets. I also understand the storage costs. It's the bandwidth costs that I'm not quite getting. If I store five 1GB files it seems I am within the free tier, but if 20,000 people download the files, do I suddenly take a huge hit?

Also, any issues interfacing with this service from a Mac? I assume not, but never want to assume...

yes i store 2gb on there but sometimes more people download stuff from my bucket and i pay like 5-10$...
i recommend you checking dropbox..recently used google drive for archiving my pdf collection which is like 4Gb and it took ages from my side..its very slow service (dont know maybe im getting slow speed because im in free memb. tier)
there is also Box but you have max size limit 5Gb in there even at most expensive plan.
if you have Galaxy S3 , Note II you ll get 48GB free space on Dropbox which is amazing..(for 2 year)

To use Amazon S3 you need to have (or write) software that uses their API. That's separate from the service itself.

Looks like Dropbox will do the trick. I upgraded to paid account. Still not sure of bandwidth limit. Wasn't entirely clear. We'll see how it goes.

200 GB a day if you have the Pro plan.

True, but you can use freely available tools such as this Firefox add-on... https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/amazon-s3-organizers3fox/ or the Amazon Web Services management console... http://aws.amazon.com/console/#s3

I'm very familiar with it. I've used S3 since it was first released as well as many other services from AWS (EC2, etc.). I would never use it for file sharing on a forum like this.

We use Amazon's S3 plus Transmit from Panic. Amazing setup for the price. I just send clients public links to files and everything works very smoothly. You can even mount S3 as a drive using Transmit. Very effective.

Just looked at our bills and we've never had one over $4/month, and we have our entire company backed up on there.

For your own backups and for sharing work with clients it makes sense, but I would not suggest uploading R3D/ProRes/DNxHD files to S3 and putting the links online in a public forum where thousands of people could potentially download them. You could end up with a huge bill.

Here is a calculator to estimate S3 storage/transfer costs: http://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/calc5.html

If you have 5 TB of downloads you are looking at a bill of over $600 per month. There are currently over 12,000 people browsing this forum.

Good call, I guess I missed the part where he's wanting to share with all of reduser.

If it's going to be a regular thing, you might want to opt for a CDN. They typically charge per GB of bandwidth, and have minimum threshold requirements. It would be overkill if you want to pass videos around, but then again, you could charge a couple of dollars and see if there's any real demand for such footage. Not everyone has access to fast internet.

I'm with Brandon, drop box is great for things like sharing what your talking about with minimal expense yet has "some" security. For aws you'd probably need to go with CloudFront with a joomla type front end (run around $5k a month when it's all said and done with 20Terabytes a month of download [if it was a full business i'd go aws though]). wordpress is another dcm that would run around $3k a month for the volumes your talking about(btw ... for reduced requirements, the 299$ version per year of wordpress could work for you, would give a nice business interface too).
