Just got email about firmware upgrade for 512GB SSD. Says the SSD has to be sent into RED for the upgrade??

What's the deal with that? It should be possible to to apply an upgrade in the field...

Really. Did they hint what the firmware upgrade is about?
Faster, or stability fixes?

Surprised you haven't had it, it was a public email to all customers also announcing production firmware 3.3.15:

"If you were invoiced for REDMAG 512GB cards on or before January 10, 2013, you would need to return your REDMAG(s) to RED for a firmware update on the internal SSD to access certain project settings.

The new SSD firmware increases reliability and addresses reported performance issues of the REDMAG 512GB. Please contact upgrades@red.com to get this optional - yet recommended - update performed."

I think 512 should be faster, their maybe some firmware upgrade to get better performance, also maybe some better trim work?
I really hope to upgrade the firmware on my computer or Epic.

Free Upgrades? Man - Red is nice to do that for you guys.

Personally I wouldn't look a free horse in the mouth too hard. Just my opinion of course...

Why no user firmware install?

I'm sure Red has legitimate and well thought-out reasons for not allowing you to apply this upgrade yourself.

True that... they've allowed owner upgrades for antennae, side handle fixes, camera firmware etc. etc., so I don't think they would balk at allowing a firmware upgrade for a Redmag if it were feasible. Probably just no camera firmware path that allows this without re-writing camera firmware.

I don't quite get it. Then the upgrade is only for the people who received the e-mail or it is optional for everyone with a 512GB Mag?

On the 10th Jan, you should have received the standard mail from RED regarding the availability of the new firmware (V 3.3.15). There was a second news item in the mail concerning the 512 SSD. You should have got this mail on your RED registered email account.

Basically, if you bought the SSD before 10th Jan 2013, (which I presume means all that have them), you should send it in for an upgrade as I'd imagine it applies to all 512 SSDs.

Contact the upgrade team - I'm sure they'll help :yesnod:

As Andy said,

literally every one that owns 512GB SSD RED mags needs to contact RED via the upgrade email address present in the email that was sent as part of the Release Build upgrade, you'll as usual need ot provide were the SSD mags are shipping form and to, and you'll et an RMA address with a Fedex Shipping label to follow... that simple, and an other FANTASTIC service provided by our friends @ RED... ;)

dont think they ll release out their SSD firmwire..
Just sent in ours today. Yep, I'm thinking the same thing. The REDMAGs are another animal entirely. Firmware for the brains, REDmotes, side handles, etc -- that's all stuff RED can feel pretty confident about having in the field. The MAGs on the other hand... It makes sense why they want it done this way. Kudos on them for even doing it.
