RODE just released a new pro mic for IPhone / iPad that turns it into a kind of Zune recorder (minus the XLR inputs)

"With up to 24-bit/96k* recording and on-board high-fidelity A/D conversion, your iXY recordings are rich, smooth and accurate."

Definitely an interesting option...

Right... so soon I'm about to expect sound recordists on set dangling iPhone's on boom-poles to record sound?

Not as crazy as iPhone on steadicam used as a pro camera... Unlike that - this actually produces high quality audio. It's the mic that matters - how you record the data is secondary - and clearly not compromised here...

Is that photo of the thing real? I didn't think iOS apps could go 180 degrees (upside down).

Then why not get a dedicated recorder like the DR-40, for less money, with a longer battery life, multiple audio inputs all in a device that would survive a drop to the floor?

Because that would be to "mainstream" for the hipster iPhone audio recordist... :-D

I prefer to use the Sound Devices 744T and shoot the project with a 1080-capable point and shoot.

of course a dedicated recorder is generally a good idea. But they often have about 2GB of storage, you need to get more SD cards for additional storage. And like already mentioned (and should be known by professionals), it's the microphone and AD-converter that is relevant, not the actual device. A good mic can be more expensive than a cheaper all-in-one recorder, which is actually not new. This hasn't changed since the beginning of audio recording.

The only reason this looks exciting to me is due to improved battery life compared to an H4N. I swear, mine eats through batteries like they are going out of style... Stamina mode or not.
