Better way to sell used RED?

Hey guys.

I've been watching the For Sale forum (looking for a screen/side handle) for a while and I've noticed a couple of patterns that I think might be optional.

It seems inevitably someone will post something and the same 5-6 questions pop up immediately after: Where are you? Will you trade? Will you split it up? What about the shipping? Who handles the transfer fee? Do I need to worry about duties?

Similarly, it seems that everyone selling is having to do that thing where you go to RED.Com, copy the URLs, copy the list price, show your asking price, come back and RE-edit your listing once one thing has purchased etc etc.

So I'm trying to figure out if I can just make it easier for everyone, and maybe even add new functionality (I personally would love to get an -email- when someone lists a Touch Screen for sale, for example.)

This is a sample listing I made using the tool I'm just calling "RedExchange" at the moment. It took about 15 seconds to make this listing.

It doesn't obviously give you the ability to save your listing, it's missing a ton of inventory from the store, it's just core functionality but I thought I'd see what you guys thought of it.

Which bugs? I'm sure there are a handful, but curious which ones you bumped into so I can try to minimize the big ones.

It also needs the ability to add things that aren't necessarily in the RED catalog, I believe.

"About" and "Contact" don't work.

I don't see how I can change the asking price.

The biggest lack for me would be that I cannot add 3rd party gear.

You might want to add the option of "local pick up only", "local pick up preferred", "only US sales", "only EU sales", "shipping worldwide".

Can the seller write an invoice? Is VAT specified? Is VAT included (important here in Europe).

"Media" section lacks 320 & 640gig drives, and the 128SSD for the R1.

"Support", "Lenses", "Control", "Misc" and "Modules" all return empty results.

"List" price on the R1 is misleading - that was only for a brief time for battle tested cameras.

Maybe each item should have the option of choosing its condition "new/original packaging" "only opened" "slightly used" "used with some marks of use" "well used but functional" "broken"

For the R1 one should specify which sensor it has, and whether it has the CF card or SSD module.

Epic comes in 3 flavours - Epic-X, Epic-M and Epic Monochrome.

Cameras should also have their serial numbers included (or the option of "available on request")

Another good idea would be to allow thread bumping only once every 7 or 5 days like it's done on most places. Also different forums for buying and selling.

All good points and ideas, I should've specified. I havent' filled out all the inventory just cause it's a little on the tedious side. I'll likely get it done by the weekend.

The asking price isn't very clear but you change it by clicking on it.

Great call re pickups, shipping. And yes, the condition and status needs to be in there.

When you click on the Epic you get to then choose which flavour it is.

Great call re: R1 sensor and media.

I can work some of these changes in over the next day or two, still a pet project at the moment. But thank you VERY much for taking the time to give feedback!

Actually, I would drop the "list" section in the produced table. While helpful for the seller, prices do change, and often it is about availability. Also, when importing gear, costs are added.

Would be great if it was easier to change the QTY - just by clicking on it.

When selling multiple items, it should clarify that the price is per piece.

It would be great to get a preview of the table that is generated.

Option to give a package price (as opposed to simply adding up everything).

Last test I ran had an extra tag at the end that was too much.

Copy to clipboard did not work on windows/firefox combo.

Specify the currency.

Thanks, I'll add all of these to the "to do" list.

I wish I had access to the actual shipping weights for some of these things. If I knew that, I could actually calculate shipping based on the sender/receivers zipcodes, at least domestically, so people would just know.

Also, I had some thought to allowing a "connect with facebook" or "connect with google +" or LinkedIn. It would give you a chance to verify that the person was who they say they are in some capacity.

You know... I think I could probably create a "scraper" for B&H photo (is there a better reference site out there? Not sure.) so that non-red items could also be posted that way. Just drop the link in, and the site would grab the photo, inventory, price, etc etc.

I could also add Phone Verification. You know, make the system send an SMS text message, and when the person enters that code, you know they have, at the very least SOME sort of phone that has the ability to receive texts. Should cut down on fraud at least 1%. :sneaky2:

Although to be honest i dunno how easy it is to get a random SMS receiving phone #? Google Voice is still linked to -something- right?

BUMP:

I found some time to work on this and added quite a few things.

A. Photos. You can now upload photos, and it'll automatically create thumbnails for the gallery. If you click on the thumbnails it'll take you to the page for that item which will show the full photo and items, etc.
B. Third Party Products. You can now manually add 3rd party non-red products.
C. Users. You can create an account so all this stuff doesn't go into the ether.

D. Quantity. You can increase quantity just by clicking on the quantity box.

There are a number of minor glitches that were corrected and usability things.

The next few things I'll add will LIKELY be --

SOLD indicators on thumbnails
Phone Verified Sellers
SMS Verified Sellers

And then maybe a reverse interface for Buyers, so you could easily browse things?

Open to suggestions!

This is a fun project. I'm not entirely sure how to get people to use it
