Hello guys,
Like title says, i bought a red cradle, and i need to mount it on my red, what adapter or piece do i need to do it?
i'm new on Red things, and you help is very appreciated.
i can buy original or third party solutions, please give me the advice, and if you sell what i need, i'm going to buy, preferably in Europe.

thanks!

You might need to buy a few things or come up with a way of rigging it up yourself!
It usually attaches to the rods via the DSMC universal mount.

So the question is, do you have top mounts and rods and if so are they 15mm or 19mm?

It does look like it has plenty of holes so maybe you can also come up with a more DIY solution, but it depends what you have already??

love

Freya, thank you very much for your answer :-)
I have a rig, a Zacuto knock off from Korea (Gini Rig), but it has only a little plate to mount the camera on it, at the bottom.
i don't have gears to mount the cradle on top of the Red.
You suggested me this one: http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc-universal-mount-15mm
is this piece enough good to let me mount the cradle on it?
thanks again!

Jean Maurizio

yes.. BUT.... this mount then attaches to a baseplate, or rides on rods.. does not fit directly onto the R1 body, as far as I know.

one of the solutions to mount a cradle to top of R1 is:
R1 topside mount
http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc-top-mount-red-one

then 2 19mm rods, whatever length you desire,

then this piece attaches to the cradle

Thank you Christopher!
if anything else exist (third party, etcetera) i'll try to make some DIY thing, and in a second time i'll go for the base production pack, with rods and mount.
Red One used gears rised very much in this time due to new BT Red One batch, and i'm already out of budget.
As soon i will take some jobs with the Red, i'll buy originals.
for now i think i'll go only on cheap, third party or DIY mounts.
Thanks to you and Freya for straight me up, i'm so new to this Red stuff, coming from dslr, that is a whole new world of thinghs :)
thank you!

ok.. even simpler.. metric bolts, strip of metal, and a drill to cut holes in that metal to bolt a bar acroos the upper back of the camera, and then to the cradle..
if you use enough washers, nuts, and bolts, it could probably be improvised with less than $10 of hardware.. though it would be pretty basic.

The Red One Cradle will mount directly to the DSMC Top Mount Red One with two 1/4"-20 bolts into two of the five screw holes on top:
http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc-top-mount-red-one

but will be more limited in positioning and weight balance as it won't be able to slide back and forth on 19mm rods as it could if mounted on a Universal Mount. But for now it would save you the cost of the Universal Mount and 19mm rods.

Exactly. Also keeps your weight down quite a bit if you aren't using rods for other things. My guess is you aren't or would just get a universal mount and be done with it.

I've never found it to be a balance issue, unless you have a very short dovetail and can't adjust enough.

It might be worth checking out the element technica sale (see other thread) as they have special 15mm top mounts which can use 15mm rods like used on dslrs often and also a cheese plate combo etc. All cheaper prices for brand new stuff!

http://elementtechnica.mybigcommerce.com/elements-topside-combo/

I'm guessing you could maybe bolt the thing to the cheese plate maybe?

Erics tip sounds good tho!

No idea if that trick would work with an Element technica stuff too?
Anyone got any idea?

THIS!

Worth listening to Eric as he knows his stuff! :)

Does this picture show it directly mounted to a top mount?

Ah no! Looking again, maybe not. I think it's mounted to the very end of the ittle rails via the other thing.

Jean, it's worth looking at pictures of red ones to get an idea of what everything actually is.
Google images is your friend! :)

Guys you are great!
Thanks for your answers, i'm sold for the top mount, for now i'll go there.
Thanks Eric for the advice on how to mount it.

Looks to me like you might even be able to use an ET top mount:

http://elementtechnica.mybigcommerce.com/elements-red-one-top-rod-mount-15mm/

It claims the spacing of the holes on top is the same as on REDS.

and the price is kinda nice.
Talk to the ET people, they are nice and will give you a better price on shipping if you email them I suspect.

Well spotted Freya - yes they would work the same as Red's Top Mount for mounting a Red cradle, and at a great sale price at the moment - only thing is they are 15mm rod standard which will dictate other accessory choices in future. Not necessarlly a problem, but something to bear in mind.

hey guys; what lenght are those rods please?

thanks

Was going to say they look like the standard 12 inch rods, but actually those look a bit shorter - I'd guess maybe 10 inches - 12 inches is a more useful length for Red top rods in my opinion though.

Those are also 19mm diameter rods, rather than 15mm ones.

Hello guys,

I decided to go with Element Technica, due the good price they are having now.
I need and advice:

How lon is the rod i'm going to take for the upper part of the camera?

And for the lower part, which piece do i need and how long, considering i have follow focus and matte box for 15 rods (not for 19)

Just these last thing, and i will have everything to start! :)

Thank you!

Jean

lots of creative ways to do it. when u gotta go super, and i mean super, lightweight the best way is to mount it on a top mount via the Red bolt set. saves you the weight of the rods
