That's how much footage shot is being reported in American Cinematographer for The Hobbit.

Yikes!

One crazy number. One great "film".

It truly is an Epic production.

That is 1024 Terrabytes. Considering that it was shot in 48 frames, two streams per camera (3D) and multiple cameras, and then again multiple backups, this almost sounds too little, if anything...

Edit: A quick google confirms my suspicion that it the total data amount must be in Petabytes.

exactly what i was thinking... they must have been tight.

I would say petabyteS. A single petabyte isn't all that much these days. With the amount of work being poured into the Hobbit, number of cameras, crew, etc.. there's no way it all fits into a single petabyte. Oh, wait, according to Jim's recent thread about the equivalent of film shot, that right there puts it easily to more than a single petabyte.

Yeah, I forgot about that thread. So the equivalent of more than 27 million feet is how many petabytes? How many petabytes does it take to capture a hobbit?

Depends on frame rate, data rate, aspect ratio, and pixels. Lots and lots of variables.

All of the the major post houses in LA have invested in servers of several petabytes, simply because they're working on multiple projects at one time. Even if you have 4 or 5 2K projects, you can run out of space very quickly, especially when there are network issues, multiple operators trying to access the same server at the same time, file transfers running in the background, and so on. How they handle this stuff at Weta and Park Road Post is amazing.

1 PB = 1000000000000000B = 10005 B = 1015 B = 1 million gigabytes = 1 thousand terabytes

Alot of digital information (lol)

Petabytes seem large today... In the same way we thought of Terabytes only a few years ago.

Very true, Jeff. Not long ago, I saw an ad for some kind of entertainment/data organization convention, and their tagline was "Petabytes Are the New Terabytes."

So after petabyte comes exabyte, zettabyte and yottabyte. But what's after that? Krackenbyte?

Someone was obviously having fun with coming up with the name yottabyte. Only problem is will not that mess up data syntax with?

I think up then we will be using some kind of vegetable to record on. No more SSD! Everything will be organic and recyclable!

Seems like a Wetabyte.

Petabyte would be if they used real animals.
