  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello Guys,
I have a dream to build a post-production facility . Please help to pick the right equipment again we well cater only low budget regional films in northern india. I don't know much about post-production line but this the equipment list I just gather from B&H video & few friends . Please send much info you can about what should I get or not to get far as equipment. Open for your honest advice & suggestion. Thanks you very much . Film editing:-
Mac Pro 2-3 setups Avid/FCP with Red Rocket card.


Color grading:- 1 setup Mac or PC Basic.
Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve with Tangent Devices Element Panels Kit
Proper color grading monitor etc...


VFX:- Softimage xsi, Autodesk Smoke,Adobe After effects. Sgi octane machine etc....


ADR :- Pro Tools HD with good qty mic setup


Sound Fx:- best sound library


Preview Theatre :- 2K or 4K projector with 5.1 surround sound setup....
 
The first thing you should probably get is someone who's done this kind of thing before, at least for consulting purposes.

I already gave you some. Asking for free facility design consulting on an Internet forum is not a particularly effective way of getting the information you need if you're starting from scratch and spending lots of money. You need to have someone you can sit down with, have a continuing exchange with, and who knows both your needs and your potential market. And you likely need to pay them for that consultation and design work. That's a professional approach. Asking what you're asking here is like saying "I want to be a billioinaire. How do I do that?".

Doing what you're suggesting is not as simple as you seem to think it is, even if it's built on commodity hardware and even if you have Steve Shaw building LUTs for you.

yeah it true I thing I should really sit down with consulting people . You have any idea how much they charge ?
 
If you have to go the Mac route at least try to wait out for the next mac pro, its around the corner....or at least that's what i keep telling myself...

also why do you need so many apps from so many suites...i'd say just buy cs6 and use p pro... then you get something even better then fcp7, and it has AE... as for grading use redcine x pro...its free... you can always add avid and resolve in later...

also consider starting with resolve lite, again that is also a freebie...

I wouldn't even buy a Mac Pro now, get a retina and a BMC and then you get the full version of resolve, have a camera, and a computer that isn't 3 years old and about to be updated... you can use the retina in the mean time as half ass editing machine and it works great for field work...small footprint...

there ram comes soldered in tho, that sucks
 
Brian, careful what you advise. Apple made no guarantees about a new MacPro, only "something really great for professionals" sometime "late next year" (2013). The last time an Apple CEO promised something "awesome" for professionals, it was Jobs talking about FCP X. The MacBookPro is at the end of its product cycle, cannot accept graphics cards, and three times as expensive as a good deal on a used MacPro.

Pawitter, I would find a disgruntled but highly motivated and talented employee at a post house somewhere else. To prevent anyone accusing you of sniping their market AND their staff, perhaps consider headhunting someone outside your region or market. If he is sick of running the night shift for a big house in Delhi, bring him on as facility manager/stakeholder in Patiala... without his/her expertise, you should be paying a consultant six figures USD (at least!) to put together a facility for you. A friend just shot a feature in Northern India and told me a kino 4x4 rents for about $2 a day compared to $75 here in NY... is he pulling my chain? If he isn't, I would find it hard to recommend a Californian consultant for "low budget" Indian productions.

For anyone reading what Brian said and wondering about buying a MacPro, here's the skinny on building a machine to run damn fast right now.

1) Buy used. Absolutely buy used.
2) Don't get a 2008 MacPro, the bus speed is limiting and they can't seem to take 3TB internal drives. Easy to spot, firewire 400 on the front. Go 2009 and above.
3) You want an machine with more than one processor (not core) for resolve or decent Red performance without a rocket, i.e. 8-core.

I just picked up a barely used 2010 8-core for 1700, under AppleCare until November. Of course this means a new model will be released next week! Just get jobs that will pay off the machine and that concern will evaporate. Here's a shopping list:

6x 4G Ram $150
GTX 570 from MacVidCards $600
Samsung 840 Pro 512G SSD $570
OWC or MCE Optical Bay SSD mount kit $40
4x 2TB Hitachi Enterprise Class UltraStar, for internal 8TB RAID.

yes you right I should wait for new mac pro's. and kino rent is 20-25 USD per day I think your miss 0 . I well purchase my equipment some time in Mar-April 2013 hopefully after I visit the NAB 2013..Thanks Ryan appreciate for your help.
 
Waiting till NAB might be a good idea given how much you want to spend. Also coming to guys like M Most etc, the archons of our industry, is best done when you have a plan in place you'd like their opinion on. We're lucky enough to have a few posting here, but can't expect them to do all the work for us!

I should also point out that in terms of running a 4K-capable or otherwise highly advanced post-processing facility, you're talking linked machines running Linux, not my weasly little 8-core Mac Pro :)

I think you need to have a clear understanding of your target market and identify clients and there needs. You also need to get the proposed facility staffed with skilled people. The absolute best thing you can do is select good staff/freelancers to work for you and with you, a pile of equipment how ever good is of no use if the people who operate it arnt suitable or good enough.

Id say December 2012, my money is on a mixed environment of Premier/ After effects of CS6 suite of applications for Picture handling, Resolve for Grading with the best Colour control surface and Monitoring you can afford, and Protools with a dedicated control surface for Audio, again with best monitoring you can afford. This doesnt cover off much of the high end stuff but could do much of the work. Then theres the rooms and decor to house it all which needs to be suitable for Broadcast or high end Features, Hospitality, Marketing, Financial Management, data archive, fast data links.

And just to re-enfoce the point, your people of most important. Id start there if i were you.

Let's exchange some experiences and thoughts, we're not fighting for the same group of customers anyways, but we'll have to do it via e-mail. I might also have some hardware I can sell you, as I would like to do a few small upgrades. I.e. replacing a fully equipped 8-core Mac Pro, with a 12-core version (not necessary, but I just want to insult the PC-guy in our company who just got a fancy new windows based VFX-station) :p[/FONT]

Oh man, your right!!! but none the less i have been holding out like 2 years now, i can't give in this late in the cycle... im actually kitting out a mag downloading cart right now but i'm gonna get a mbp and just wait on next gens mac xeons assuming they happen. i want a mobile station anyway... tho i will regret it on encodes i bet

I appreciate your help guys . Right now I'm just planing about equipment ,space,staff , Technicians etc . Technology is changing so much very hard to keep up with it.
New mac is on the way , Red 4k projector that alone solve big mystery . Any ways I like to tell you guys that I am waiting till NAB 2013 because by that time I should know what to buy or not to buy & hope new Mac Pro & Red 4k projector should be out in market .

Id also suggest that the latest mac is not always best value for money or the most suitable for need some times. And remember second hand gold is still gold.
