  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mattebox recommendation light, not too expensive?

Umm okay, I'm glad you don't like using matte box's but that wasn't my question.

FYI: I need them for filters and to reduce flair (it's not always wanted)

Getting the strongest possible footage while on set is a good habit to get into. MB is Must-Have-tool on set, unless you have Mattebox App (lol)

I agree, matte box is an absolute MUST.

I havent used the one you linked. Is it for a canon lens?

I have the OConnor Obox and it is a great, solid matte box. Its made for larger diamater lenses and I had to get a reducing ring to use it on my Red Primes/zoom, so it might not be the best fit if you're using still glass.

Yeah mainly using EF Still glass, but PL in the future as well.

Hi guys, I'm thinking of buying this one.. any idea if it's good? I've held one before and it was very light and high quality.

Any idea if anything is better? or maybe this won't block out enough light due it being rather shallow?

Ideas?

I would avoid this mattebox, I had this when I had a 7D. Bought it cause it was the perfect size for the camera. But there's a lot of light leak and your be using a lot of black wrap as lensers. Save up and great a Obox or ARRI or bright tangerine.

As you can see in the picture where the light leak's main source is.

Damn... that's too bad. Thanks for the info.

My preference is a light matte-box that's not too massive. or pricey.

I have the genus, and it rocks for the lightweight size and price. It's a SLR lens matte box only of course. I was an AC for years, so I know my matte boxes. This totally does the job for it's price point. It also is built to last (except for the nuns knickers, which rip pretty easy)

My only word of warning would be to make sure that your follow focus will still engage the lens as this matte box is a compact lightweight design. I have a tiny little CAVISION follow focus that just barely fits on the operator side.

The Movcam mattboxes are the best bang for the buck out there. I also have the Ocnnor Obox and like it a lot and it's pretty reasonable as well. (Both are way superior to Redrock, sorry to say.)

Both have their strengths, but overall the Movcam is more versatile and less money if you outfit the Obox fully. You will future proof yourself by getting the Movcam MM1, but as someone mentioned they have less expensive clip-ons. For still lenses (I use them a lot as well as PL) you can use the Chroziel flex donut and on either the Movcam or Obox with a 114-110 adapter (Oconnor's is cheaper) and it will cover almost all still lenses. IMHO can't do better pricewise with either for a solid lightweight mattbox that will last.

Both B&H and 16x9 are Movcam dealers. Don't let the made in China scare you. The quality is solid.

Yup, best lightweight matte box system available is the Viv. Not the cheapest though (but is Arri quality). Has the widest viewing angle of any matte box, exclusive filter stages that are easily added or removed, 2 or 3 stages, optional 138mm filter bellows, clamp on or rod mount, with soon coming swing away add on, and many more features. Bright Tangerine is owned and operated by Andy, a long time engineer at Arri. So quality and features are unmatched.

I just bought the Viv so now I own a Strummer and Viv if anyone would like a demo. They are both amazing, just needed the lighter Viv setup for a documentary I'm shooting. Viv is the perfect size for Epic/Scarlet.

Hi Vlad,

I have the genius, and bought it for two reasons, it's durable and light. The pro version can also mount on rods, and comes with top and side flags. I had the Red mattebox but sold it. It can't handle travel very well. I use mine in Africa and holds up great. It also has rotating stages which the Red does not.

We have the medium and large versions of the Lanparte. They are both very robust (especially the larger 150mm model). The build quality was shockingly good (we were nervous about them being a cheap knock off). The fit finish and all fasteners are top notch. we like them so well, we ordered the top handle, shoulder mount and front handles. All machined from solid aluminum and really nice quality. The parts mix nicely with many of the wooden camera rail components.

I have the Movcam and it's great!
Not so light weight and compact but well built, solid.
It does the job very well, no complaints at all.
It's swing away and I got this Chrosziel C-450-22 110mm Flexible Step-Down Ring Covering 50-85mm for Matteboxes
and this Chrosziel C-411-59B 130-110mm Step-Down Ring for SunShades
Perfect for still lenses and pl glass too.

Great thanks Michael, P.S: I'd love to come shoot in Africa with you sometime ;)
