  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Budgetminded fcpx questions...

i have a feeling the new imacs with the gtx 680mx might be a nice step up....ok....i am hoping.....

I have a RedRocket in my machine (Mac Tower running 10.7.5, 2x2.26 quad xeon, 20GB RAM) and it flies through renders in the background while I continue to work forward.

All adjustments in RCX - including curves - reflect immediately in FCPX; with both programs open at the same time you can see it happening. Sending XML at the end of the edit to both Resolve or Smoke 2013 is seamless and painless.

FYI: This is FCPX's debayer setting. With a Rocket "better performance"= half debayer and "higher quality"= full debayer. Without a Rocket "better performance"= quarter debayer and "higher quality"= half debayer.

Hi Paul - Just want to confirm you have playback preferences set to "better performance" and have all the automatic analysis/background transcoding turned off.

How about that? Helping each other rather than whining… I'm enjoying it as well.

+1 I've just seen another thread started -
What is the next step from RED after pricefall on Epic! Or how to catch the progress!

And it's back to money again!

I've been dipping in & out of FCPX since it launched and I have to agree with the general comments made here 10.06 really is fantastic. I was about to opt for Premier - not now. FCPX is just going to get better and better. 10.06 convinces me that Apple will keep pushing on the Pro end with a new 'Tower' as soon as a suitable chip is makes it worthwhile. I have even heard rumours that the next one will have their own and there will be no need for a Rocket :)

ok....just did a really quick project to see how the new fcpx works with the red raw files....
i checked my settings again, better performace is on, even with background render on i was able to:
take 4 4K clips, drop them in the timeline....re-time each one (between 10 and 50% for kicks...)....
drop clips on top where the first clips met...ramped the transparency in and out...
dropped 4K light leaks on top of that (retimed as well)....
added flares on top for fun....
and put another clip on top....
so at this point i have 5 layers (all retiming and with adjusted transparency)...
and it plays....
not sure if this is all the new fcpx...with my DSLR footage i wasn't able to this and remain so smooth....
i am a little blown away....was trying to figure out how to make a rocket happen.....there is absolutely no need (i don't need the extra speed for final output)
i am on a 2011 3.4 imac 32ram, 1gb vram, striped thunderbolt ssd raid for startup, pegasus R12 for data....
ok...i am totally blown away.....just saved a bundle towards epic!

Hi Sidney - I believe the gamma bug issues where related to quicktime 7 and FCS3 - I could be wrong - but I don't run into gamma issues anymore.

Paul I am happy to hear your performance report - Is this on your imac? I too have held off on buying a rocket because of FCP X - It is nice to see all cores being used... And I mean All... Apple has some core competencies when it comes to multicore efficiency and it is starting to show - Grand Central Dispatch and openCL were built for moments like this...

I am very anxious to see what the next 3 months bring with the advent of the Xeon Phi...

Ivan - to follow up on your Red Cine Curves question - FCP X should load any RMD made or edited by Red Cine - so if you make RMD files before importing into Red Cine - FCP X uses those. If you don't FCP X makes its own and places them in the event folder... So you can just open up red cine and point it to that folder to make your grade edits.

But do they reserve one core for the OS? I'm running into issues of FCPX burying the entire system during a heavy render. I can't switch apps, switch to the finder or even force quit. I have to wait, or hard shutdown. It's a major drag.

I definitely need more RAM.

i had several apps (safari, mail, evernote, iMessage, direct mail, bento, contacts, calendar, reminders) open and bitcasa and crash plan doing their thing as well during my little test....
no problem....
i know from my past experience (the 2011 can officially hold 16gb ram) that fcpx likes ram.....always ran into problems....after stepping up to 32 things got a lot better.....one of the reasons i am hesitant about the retina.....and with that you are stuck at 16 no matter what....on the other hand it sounds like it runs fine?
i might have to get a retina for location work....key is that it looks like i really won't need a rocket......

Hi Scott - is this during an export or "timeline render"? Definitely not standard behavior from my limited perspective of using it on 4 different machines - Do you have any 3rd party plugins enabled that are being rendered, or 3rd party motion generators, etc?

Render files end up with the project - so is the drive your projects on nice and clean, free of fragmentation and permissions issues -

The lowest end combo I've used is 12gb of ram with a 5770 - that has been ok - but 16gb is definitely better. I should note that I'm not working with 4k projects at this point - just 4k material in 2k projects.... This would affect render.

I would try the age old "Empty Library caches and delete preferences" trick with a reboot and see if it affects things at all. I'm on 10.8.2 as well - which I would recommend if you don't need rocket support (openCL and GPU driver improvements over 10.7)

It's rendering a timeline somewhere.

I did recently install FX Factory... For my last quickie project. That has to be it. Thanks for reminding me.

I do need the RAM though.

The drive is pretty clean.

I uninstalled the plugin; no change. The uninstall may have been shit, but it is just as likely that the problem lies elsewhere.

Damn I need that RAM!

There is a CUDA update too... I must be overdue for my housekeeping!

I would like to add that its such a relief in the wallet that I can view my R3Ds in FCPX using a cheap Black Magic Intensity Pro PCI card.

Seeing footage on a low budget display is also nice option.

Sure its not a Flanders with a DeckLink Extreme but it works :)

Scott -

10.0.7 was just released and has some fixes for background rendering timing out with 3rd party plugins - Maybe this will help?
