  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Black Magic DeckLink 4k Extreme to replace Red Rocket?

"The DeckLink 4K Extreme model includes all these features as well as as full resolution 4K monitoring!"

Almost too good to be true right?

Again.

When using both connections for Dual Link 3 Gb/s SDI you can get full 4K playback which is 4 times the resolution of regular 1080HD.

It's hard to believe but this is exactly the way I understand it.

"Now you can handle any job your client presents to you, from TVC to 2K and 4K feature films."

Pretty hard to mistake their advertizing. Anyone have hands on experience with this card?

Just because it can playback 4K doesn't necessarily mean it's tailored for R3D's and can debayer them efficiently. I guess someone will have todo a test. By my hunch is that if it had a RED specific benefit, they would advertise it.

But hey...someone test it out!

Debayering R3Ds and playing back 4K RGB footage are two different things. I don't think this will do the job of the RR.

Gave Dan an e-mail to find out more about this card. I'll post my findings hopefully tomorrow.

I sure hope your wrong Terry. The RR has been around for 3 years and you know how fast tech moves these days... Three years after it's release and there is still no competitor to the RR? Seems odd.

It's for 4k output. Not r3d debayer. Rr does debayer, and just happens to have 4k sdi out too. The rr is not a typical io video card like decklink and kona. Kona 3G has had 4k playback for some time now. But it doesn't debayer r3d. It can playback a 4k timeline to a 4k monitor. That is all.
Believe me red isn't going to allow that. They probably make more profit on a rr than they do on an epic now.

Regardless of what RED's motive might be, R3D is a proprietary format and they don't give out the keys to the kingdom. Debayering ain't gonna happen without RED blessing it.

I'm sure it's a straight output card and doesn't claim to do any debayering.

If your computer is fast enough to debayer full 4k in realtime I'm sure the BM card will output it from a timeline.

This is not, however, a substitute for a Red Rocket, just capable of 4k output. The differences are obvious and many.

So the card is not going to speed up playback in Premiere?

I think that depends on whether it has CUDA capabilities.

If it's a traditional BM output card it will just allow you to output higher resolutions, not necessarily assist with processing like a Quadro.

In the case of Red debayering, if it doesn't debayer the R3D then it isn't doing the job of a Red Rocket. Debayering is its major function, output is a bonus.

I think this card works just like any other BM-video card. just with 4k res. You wil probably have to eksport from RCX to ProRes or some other codec to be able to edit in full 4k.

That card does non-compressed 4K over SDI connections. R3D is compressed, and Raw ( which means it has not been debayered yet. )

This card claims to do 4k real time playback. Does that mean this can replace a RR?

No the RED Rocket debayers the BM 4k does not its just a play out device. If you had crazy fast storage like Fusion IOFX and transcoded to your R3D to 4k DPX or 4k ProRes 4444 ect. and had a 4k monitor then you could playback through the BM decklink but with out crazy fast storage you aint playing any 4k.

After following up with Dan at BM it looks like he confirmed what many have you stated.

"No, this card doesn't really do anything to replace a Red Rocket card.
This card, like pretty much all of our I/O cards, are about getting video
In and Out of the computer.

So if you are familiar with a normal DeckLink card this is just like those
but with the ability to capture 4k or output 4k.

Any normal RED workflow would still apply (i.e. Adding Red Rocket cards)
but you'd have the nice addition of being able to monitor 4k as well."

Still, if you have a rocket, this card and a 4k monitor you don't need the "Shot on RED Film Festival," you have your own in your house.
