  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So what's the difference between Epic-X and Epic-M? Why is the Epic-M $5,000 more?

Sorry, just a quick question.

Epic-X is the mass-produced Epic. Epic-M is a custom-made Epic which has a machined aluminum body rather than the cast aluminum body of the Epic-X. Epic-M has a 2 year warranty, while Epic-X has a one year warranty.

M means the Epic is hand-machined cast aluminum, X is factory assembled.Get M if you are rich and want to pose with your Epic-M on Reduser.Nothing special about M's.We had one and got service 2 times in 1 month :)

I doubt very much that there is a single thing "Hand Machined" on anything Red sells. Unless you mean machined by robot hands, well that's not really accurate either since that's not how it works...Uh, somebody probably loaded the piece of aluminum into the cnc machine by hand if it s a small operation, but even that is questionable ;-)

"Hand-assembled" for M is more appropriate.

Probably I am an ignorant, but I really don't understand the difference between machined aluminum body, and cast aluminum body, isn't still aluminum?, is one lighter than the other?, are there differences in the tech specs?, for what I see, they look almost the same to me, what makes one worth $5.000 more than the other?, please humor me..

The cast one is going to be made out of an alloy that has been selected to flow well into a mold. The machined body can be made out of whatever alloy they want, probably 7072 or 6061 or something like that. Those alloys are harder, and stronger.

The cast body is made by pouring molten aluminum into a mold, probably under pressure. Although I am sure Reds casting practices are state of the art and they have very high quality control, sometimes you get air bubbles and voids in the casting. You used to see that all the time on the inside of aaton mags. Why they let them out the door like that is beyond me ;-).

The machined body starts off as a block of aluminum cut to a rough size and then placed in a cnc cabinet. There material is removed by a computer controlled robot with a spinning carbide cutter called and end mill. The cnc machine changes tools and removes material until instead of a block of aluminum, you have a camera part. Accuracy should be to within 5 ten thousands or less. Here is a link to a cnc machine working -

The casting process is cheaper and faster, with a slightly less robust and precise part. The machined part is free of voids, and made from a stronger alloy, and to tighter tolerances.

Got it!, thanks a lot, very informative, but my question is somewhat unanswered.. The casting process is cheaper and faster, Why it cost $5K more???
