  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Epic X Price Prediction

Exactly, and I seriously doubt RED would invalidate the modularity of even Scarlet, especially since a HUGE selling point for both systems (Epic and Scarlet) is the upgrade path. If it's even 8-10K I'll probably ride that upgrade train.

Again this is ALL conjecture, and working one's self up before an actual statement of prices from RED would be stress for stresses' sake.

It is allways tremendous fun to burn time on speculating on matters we have no controll over...

My prediction goes like...

Sony make their announcements
Red responds competively and agressively with new prices that will keep them competitive untill the dragons canbe released at a higher pricetarget.

The original R1 had a very "smart" price, me thinks.
Hard to beat
Whitin reach for many.

If that was a possible target for an Epic with ssd/pl, i think that might keep the factory busy until the dragon is ready. NAB'ish...

3k for 3k was the best slogan ever. Unfortunately didn't happen. But somenthing along that line for Scarlet?
4k for 4k

Brain only...

Hahaha

Won't happen of course, but would def keep the productionline warm for a while...

Yup. 17.5k is the reason many people were able to buy this camera. Unfortunately, a lot of people didn't realize it was another 10-20 grand to have it complete. Many R1s never had their full potential realized. Thank RED for the upgrade paths.

My prediction is EPIC at 17.5k. Reds making their money off ridiculously priced and necessary accessories.

I won't directly comment on your assessment on REDs pricing, as that is at their discression, but I would say that I think you kinda hit the ball running...

The Epic is a good way to sell accessories....

My prediction, $100.00 and a week's stay in Fiji on Jim's island. Just because he can.

It's fun making up nonsense threads, they do it all the time on Project Runway.

I guess I'll join in:

Epic MX new price = 17.5-20k
Current Epic owner upgrade to Dragon = 6K
New Epic price owner upgrade to Dragon = 10-15K

Scarlet X new price = 7.5k
Current owner Scarlet upgrade to Epic MX = 6K
New price Scarlet upgrade to Epic MX = 10-15K

All conjecture of course ;)

Here's a thought - would Jarred call his thread "Scarlet deal of a lifetime" ($7100 BT) if he knew that next week the price for a new scarlet would be about the same?
Just a thought....

You go on Project Runway's forums?? lol.

True true but I think the only thing that you can predict with any degree of certainty from RED is their unpredictability lol.

I think they were very surprised at the response to the BT Scarlets. That response coupled with Sony's big October 31st announcement may be what prompted the rethink at the top to re-price the Epic.

Dude, when the scarlet was first announced in 2008 there were a few scarlets planned. one of them was the 2/3 scarlet and the other was the s35 scarlet . I'm still surprised about all the complants about the s35 scarlet. All of you epic owners should have known that a s35 scarlet was coming because it was announce in 2008. It even had an early price of about $7500.

I REPEAT THE S35 SCARLET WAS ANNOUNCED IN 2008 FOR ABOUT $7500.

And 30p 5k instead of 12p 5k. So yeah. Getting 'caught off guard' by Scarlet is not RED's fault.

I predict $17.5k. I don't see a reason to offer an upgrade to new Scarlet customers though. I can see a reason to bring in existing Scarlet customers, but it should just be like the RED One. If you jumped in early, they'll give you an upgrade path. If you are a new customer--you know what you're getting yourself into.

Here's the thing though. The Epic and the Scarlet are pretty much the exact same camera. Scarlets are just failed Epics. The better their manufacturing gets, the less failed boards they will have. I imagine a lot of recent Scarlets essentially are Epics minus a couple bits and pieces. And I doubt Scarlets are still exclusively from failed Epics. If anything Scarlet volume has remained steady but surely they have less bad chips. And they aren't losing money on Scarlets so I don't think $17.5k would lose them money if they can essentially sell an Epic for $10k.

Interesting thought - that I've had a couple of times myself…

I think all Scarlet owners, whether you bought last week or Nov 3rd deserve an upgrade path equally. Neither the Scarlet or the Epic are like purchasing a Red One, ie taking a risk on a new comer to the industry. As much as the cameras, people buy obscelecene obselete.

curious where you came up with this "fact"... or "theory" ??

Waaaaaaay Back when Scarlet was announced Jim / Jared / others from RED commented that this Scarlet was possible because they had processor chips that were made for the Epic that didn't 'test up to speed'. As I understand when individual computer chips are tested when cut from a wafer - some test to the specced speed, some test as dead (and discarded), some test at a % of specced speed. Those last ones ended up in Scarlet and allowed it to do a % of the speed that Epic could do.

These are backend processor chips / boards; not sensors.
