Hey guys,

I just wrapped a short film we shot with the Scarlet. I was really impressed with the image at 4k so I wanted to see how it held up at 120fps. I shot a little test footage in San Francisco. 90% of the video is 120fps but there's a few 24p 4k shots thrown in there which should be very easy to spot (if the regular motion doesn't give it away the increased quality definitely will).

I like the option for 120 fps but like everyone else on here has said, the sensor cropping, increased noise and an almost unusable 1k format are a let down. Assuming the Scarlet hardware could handle it, I feel like RED could give us 120fps @ 2k without stepping on the EPIC's toes. But hey, what do I know ;-)

Anyways, let me know what you think... this was VERY run-and-gun style so it's definitely not a perfect test but fun nonetheless.

I like the shots of the ocean waves.

So what happens when these "random" people see your video and are like, "WTF, that is me in this video!!!??"

haha good question... hopefully they'll enjoy the slow motion version of themselves.

Evan - very nice presentation of SF and your very pretty wife (I assume). I have one question that I hope doesn't sound negative but I always wonder about in situations like this.

Much of the mood that the piece evokes is due to the very soulful music. I have no idea if you contacted the owner of the rights to it but, assuming not, do you feel at all awkward about synching the music without permission? Now, if you DO have permission then, of course, my question is not applicable. But so many times I see folks put someone's music under their shots (even major artists where you know they don't have permission) and act like it is no big deal. Music can add a lot to a piece and somehow it just doesn't seem right to do it without permission. Thoughts?

Again, not trying to pick on you as a lot of folks do it.

Love the shots of the waves crashing around and the girl looking back

He's probably not making any money off the video.

I totally think that the style of the 1k format has story purposes...kinda makes me want to give it a go on a short I'm DP'ing this weekend. very aged worn look to it.

Hey Terry,

Great question. For something like this, I'm really not concerned about it because the video's intent isn't to push any kind of product or sell anything. It's just a quick test of a camera feature. Naturally, if I was using the video for commercial use, I'd have to work out the legalities of the music but for a little test video, I don't feel like that would be necessary.

Agreed. It has kind of a cool "look" to it.

And naturally, the ProRes files I was editing look so much better than the Vimeo version (duh). I was impressed with the detail you can still get at 1k... although it's certainly not perfect, it definitely has its place.

He put the artist name and song below the video. I think you will find in most of these cases the artist will appreciate the exposure. You like the song, you see his name, you go to iTunes and purchase the song or album. This is the reality today. Embrace it.
