  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Let me start by saying that i am copy pasting this from the cinematography forum where i originally posted it without getting an answer unfortunately.

So I saw this about two weeks ago and found it visually stunning. It really struck me as it is the closest i ve seen to a scene i would like to film.I am talking about the haze/smoke effect in the woods.

I saw the bts and found out that they used these lawn mower type smoke machines to achieve it.I dont know much about them besides a post from the David Mullen that concerned smoke machines.

Now i dont really like these kinds of posts as i dont see the point of doing what others have already done but everything has already been done before so i think i can live with that. Anyway i would still like to know even if i dont go through with my original plan.

What are the options of hazing (safely obviously) large remote locations?

By the way i found that keeping this extreme aspect ratio (a combination of the 16:9 sensor and anamorphics i suppose)was a bold and interesting move.At least i ve never thought of doing that because i'd be depressed.

That clip looks like natural fog to me.
I live in the southeast Appalachians, classified as temperate rain forest. When humidity is high, you will get morning fog from dawn until about 10 am along any river or stream bottom land or wet land area most every day. No special FX needed!

Frederic : Thank you for the link.I found many amazing machines but not ones that are as portable as i would like. I will contact them about the mobile generator but it still seems like a bulky and heavy thing to carry

P.S. If they had actually hazed the sinic wall as their site seems to suggest....that would be something.

David: That was my initial impression as well but on the other hand it was too pronounced to be natural. Its in the bts video though. They did fog the place.

I have done this with a smoke fx thing we call the "tube of death"
It's not dangerous, but it is not a low budget effect.
you run thin flexible plastic tubing out for a long run in your shot.. try 100 feet or so.. tie off one end to a tent stake and plant that in the ground.
cut lengthwise slits in the tubing every three feet or so..
Get a squirrel cage fan with nozzle .. tape the open end of plastic tubing to the fan output..
run a high capacity smoke machine in to the fan input...
you can not do this with a nightclub or party style fogger.. they will NOT provide enough fog.

you will need electricity to power the fogger and the fan.

Additionally, you will need multiple setups like this, because you need to cover the possbiility that the wind will change direction.. so you need to be able to turn on another set of these if your first set's smoke is being blown away from you..

ALSO.. pro effects guys and rental houses have "lawn foggers" they are a lawnmover engine and an extra fuel tank that drips fog juice on a hot manifold... these are oil base.. and not to be used inside.. and have huge output... you can run skywriting fluid in them, if you can find one that is non-toxic.. because the operator of this machine can not get out of hte plume.

whenever using fog or smoke outside, you will want twice as many tools as each shot uses, to deal with the wind direction thing..

in the southeast, that shot probably costs $1800-$2500 in fx labor, and $1k in rental tools per day

Thank you for the time.I dont think the tube of death is necessary.I guess you use it to spread fog while keeping the fogger at a distance.
In my case I am thinking of filming in a rather remote island with lush vegetation. It does have natural fog obviously but I was thinking of augmenting it somehow.I would like to keep a small footprint so these lawn foggers seem ideal.I doubt I can rent sth similar here but I may be wrong
