Hey guys,

How's it going? Just wanted to let you know I've posted pretty in depth FCPX Red Workflow Tutorials on my site. Here's a list of the Red Centric Ones:

FCPX Red Workflow parts 1 and 2
Using Redcine-X Pro To Grade Your RAW in FCPX
FCP 7 to FCPX Red Workflow parts 1 and 2

You can find them all at:

http://themovieswemake.com/tutorials/

These are less about what the buttons do and more about how everything works and how to get your projects done.

Anyway, hope you guys like them. Got a bunch of other ones about the new release as well (they're all in the same place), but I'm guessing these'll be the ones most interesting to you guys. Anyway, check em out and let me know what you think.

Thankyou for the demo . I was hopeful that maybe this update would inspire me to buy back into FCP.

So a question ........Why are you advocating transcoding/proxies. offline/online . Is this the recommended optimum workflow ? I thought the idea of the new release was to avoid proxies, avoid multiple copies of the same files scattered throughout various HD's, as shown on the demo . How is this easier than transcoding & editing with FCP 7 because it appears to a long time user of FCP 7 this isn't the case. .....confused : /.

P.S. I was hoping FCPX would be more like CS6 in use of downrezing this appears not to be the case. However the tutorial is excellent just trying to get my head around the above.

Hey Mike,

Sorry about the confusion... and I wouldn't necessarily advocate using them... I've been doing all my projects without them, except for one case where it was easier. Anyway, the only time you'll need to use them is when you're dealing with a slow machine/drives and you need better performance... or if you have something like a feature where you might have larger projects, and proxies will give you more consistent/stable performance. If you've got a thunderbolt drive, you definitely don't need them... and honestly, on my system, I haven't needed them at all, as I even get solid performance just using a simple ESATA drive. That said, there are some DEFINITE advantages to using FCPX proxies vs. transcoding elsewhere. And the big difference is that if you transcode to proxy in FCPX, when you later switch back to your original media, FCPX will automatically apply all transform and spatial conform settings to your new clips. This means no more resizing, etc. when it's time to online/re-grade media. Also, it's going to maintain everything as you switch resolutions and aspect ratios. The bottom line is that you no longer need the geometry tab in RCX or Resolve anymore if you transcode and need to go back to your R3D's... plus it's really easy to switch back and forth to your originals (click of a button), and no more need for XML's or any reconnecting files.

So, those are the pluses... but that said, I'm still not using them for the most part as I simply don't have to. But if you do, it's WAY smoother than transcoding elsewhere.

Nice

Hi Sam,

Just wanted to add my thanks and appreciation, these videos are a superb resource. The information is really clear and the presentation is engaging.

Thank-you!

I think you have single handedly saved FCP X for Apple.
Congrats Sam. Great work/

Excellent Sam....you have renewed my interest back to FCPX...i just down-loaded it. What i would really like to see is FCP setup for color correction. What is a sound workflow for coloring? Or send to the old Color via XML ? Not having looked at FCPX much, is there a way to setup color spaces at all?

Using Redcine-X Pro To Grade Your RAW in FCPX
Forgive me if I'm missing the obvious here, but isn't the point of the new FCPX update being able to load/manipulate your RAW data (ISO, WB, curves, whatever) right in the application without needing to launch RCX-Pro?

I haven't looked at your videos yet so I'm sure they're great. Just confused at the subject matter of this one.

....watch the video as it describes this very process and you'll kick yourself for not knowing. If you shot a reel and drop it into a folder....RED did not generate RMD files....so, if you drop those R3d's into a folder to work with FCP and not the original folder you shot your material, you are generating pointers to the original R3d files...BUT, since there are no RMD folders within the original folders, FCP will create its own RMD folders within your events (working) folder. However, if you go into RCX and highlight ALL of your R3d's and then choose "create RMD" then problem solved. You can also go back to RCX at anytime and use curves or "other" tools that will update within your FCP events folder real time...since FCP nor PrPro have the multitude of tools that RCX does.

Yeah, I just watched it and I guess the takeaway from it is that FCPX doesn't have all the functionality we need built-in yet. That's a shame, because I thought that was the point of the update. Having to go back and forth between the applications and save RMD files and then psuedo-cancel an operation when FCP doesn't update automatically... what a hassle. Thanks for the info, though.

Not any different then premiere in this aspect. If you plan to grade in something else like davinci you don't need to do anything other than export your XML.

I've not used premiere, it was just the screenshots that showed the ability to make RAW adjustments directly within FCPX which really got me excited. Being able to just open my R3Ds, make my color corrections and edit away (without having to transcode or go through REDCine-X) is the (my) dream. As it stands, it looks like FCPX doesn't have the full compliment of available adjustments that REDCine does, so we're still not there yet. And judging on the tutorial video posted, it looks like even if you take the first step (every single time!) of opening your R3Ds in REDCine first and making RMDs, FCP doesn't always update the cached version... you have to "fool" it into reloading the cache under some circumstances.

Don't get me wrong, I'm VERY glad to see native R3D support right in FCP and the fact that there are some RAW adjustments available is nice. What we need is for the camera to make default RMDs on the outset (to save that unnecessary step of having to "prep" your project in REDCine first), and then ultimately just have full control of the RAW files right in FCP. With no need to transcode files any longer, it would be lovely to never have to bounce back and forth between two pieces of software ever again (unless one wishes to do so).
