I'm looking for any advice on what to use to play 4K and higher resolution media in a more 'general purpose' scenario.

Features I'm looking for in particular are:
1> Ability to open 8bit video final outputs ( mov,mp4,avi )
2> Able to play 1:1 pixels with a realtime pan mode to look around the clip at full resolution to see the detail.
3> Low cost or free.

It seems such a beast would exist, I would hope?

With all the constant talk about 4K and how great it is I would've thought some kind of player like this exists already. Is really what's happening that people only capture in 4K and all the resulting finished media is stuck at at 1080 P? I'm not seeing a whole lot of examples of 4K frames posted anywhere either… What's going on here? Sorry to be so pessimistic, but I'm starting to remember that fable of the emperors new clothes now.

To offset all of the 1080 links, here's a still from some testing I'm doing. It was shot 3K and processed to 6K increasing the resolution substantially. Enjoy.

Unless I misunderstand, you can get by just fine with most popular players on Windows. I use Media Player Classic Homecinema (with the codecs installed of course) for previewing 4K material all the time. I always make it a point to have 4K masters (mostly 3840x2160) if the acquisition was at 4K+. It works just fine. VLC works too, though it needs a fairly powerful system, plus MPC has pretty detailed Pan & Scan controls. I use H.264 (Level 5.1+). Preferably X264 but Mainconcept bundled with popular NLEs works too. Of course, works with any installed Directshow or Quicktime codecs. Some codecs are pretty demanding at 4K, but X264 is great and malleable for practically all purposes, from a quick proxy preview to a lossless master.

Hi Subhadip,
Which one allows playing 4K with 1:1 non-zoomed pixels visible ?
So in other words, if I play my 4K or 6K media, I want to see the middle 2560 x 1600 on my 30" monitor as actual pixels ( not zoomed out or zoomed in ) and then pan around to see the whole 4K frame with that 2560x1600 window as the 'looking glass' on the media , moving around to see it all .
That's what I meant by my point#2.

Thanks !

edit: OK, I remapped keys in MPCH and it kinda works. Playback stutters while panning. I wish I could pan with the mouse.

Ah, I see what you mean. That is a pretty obscure feature though, I don't know of any players that can do exactly what you want.
