  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I believe the adapter is only for offloading, not on the camera.

Can anyone confirm whether or not the Mini-Mags are able to record full res 4k as well as proxies? I know there is talk of an adapter for them to work in the regular SSD slot so I am wondering if that means they can also be used for full res recording.

Also, was a price/release date ever hinted at? I've been gone from the community for a while.

Looks like the 48gig SDs are live in the RED Store. Just ordered one. Weird there was no announcement

Heh heh heh.. good eye Patrick... you just announced it :)

They came in a bit earlier than expected... Early bird catches the worm.

Not sure why you would buy the new 48gb card? 128's are faster AND cheaper per GB

I do get your point, but probably out of the same reason someone wouldn't buy the 512GB. Although they are faster and cheaper per GB than any of them.

Ok the 48Gb could be slower as of :

"REDMAG 1.8" SSD (48GB) is tailored for the data rates of the SCARLET-X camera"

But it would be cool to know what data rate they accept on the Epic?

5k up to what compression/frame rate?

Are there any speed difference between 128 / 256 / 512 GB?

Thanks a lot.

Pat

Patrick, the 48GB is said to be half the speed of the 64, 128 and 256 GB SSDs and the 512GB is double than that of these standards.
I just don't know what that turns out to be in terms of compression ratio.

EDIT: see first post... stupid me ;)

Finally found it :)
So the higher compression ratios will be enabled via firmware update when they are stable:

Yes they are the turbo ( red colored ) cards, speeds we are slowly ramping speed up through firmware to make sure stability is priority.. The 3.3 Build has 512GB support, in the following modest improvement in ratios:

Original REDMAG
5K WS
24 - 3:1
30 - 3:1
48 - 5:1
60 - 6:1
96 - 10:1
120 - 12:1

Turbo REDMAG Build 3.3
5K WS
24 - 3:1
30 - 3:1
48 - 5:1
60 - 6:1
96 - 9:1
120 - 11:1

I see the 48GB are on the Red site for sale but there isn't any specs on what they will actually do? Would be great to have some detailed specs

Here you go, the 48GB is the old 32GB, you just getting an extra 16GB for FREE... ;)

512GB TURBO SSD - Data Rate almost double current media. Take advantage of Epic's higher Frame rates at a lower compression. Priced to match. A lot of Epic user's dream..

32GB Lower Cost SSD - Data Rate almost half current media. Matched to Scarlet's top speed. Priced to match. A lot of Scarlet user's dream..

Has RED actually released what the 48GB cards can do? If / when Scarlet gets a dragon upgrade will they work then?

They can record at 112MB/s which is half that of normal cards. According to the calculator you shouldn't have many problems shooting 6k at 24 fps if the scarlet dragon goes that high, but you'd also have less than 10 minutes of recording time at 8:1 compression.

Does anyone know what the read speed of the 512GB cars is?
I'm considering getting an ssd card for fast offloading in the field.
The Samsung 930 has 400MB/s write speed and the 940 has 520MB write speed but cost a bit more. If the Red card can actually read in 500 it will save 20% of offloading which would make it worth $150 more.
