The Nexto DI seems to be what I am looking for.

Does anyone have this set-up? Would you recommend? Can you preview your R3D files on the device?

I don't think that would work. I would just carry a laptop and get a mini card reader from RED. Get something like R3D Data Manager and make sure all your data is verified after copying it over. Safest and easiest way for me!

Nope that doesnt work that way.
Im sure a lot of us here would wish that.
We got one for the CF cards but its collecting dust now since we've gone SSD.

Currently the best solution is to get a small laptop with usb3 and eSATA, maybe firewire too. There are really cheap and small ones out there, well the prices increase as soon as you want to have a machine thats good enough to do previews in RCX. ;) BTW, try to avoid the glare-displays...

Different idea, i was thinking about getting a small android-tablet for the copy-job but unfortunately there is still nothing with faster ports than USB2.0. Having to use one USB2.0 port for the redmag reader and a external hd would not be fast enough to make this usable. I guess we have to wait until tablets with modern ports are coming out.

Yeah unfortunately the Nexto doesn't let you preview the footage to make sure it's clear to format that CF card. However, I have been using it for a few months now, and my boss has used it for years without any problems. We have had success with using them in the field and just making sure the copy was successful before formatting the card. It is a bit scary though and perhaps not the best solution out there. But it works, especially for remote locations without access to power.

Hope this helps.

The checksum feature eases the brain when no DIT carts around.
