Hi Guys, Gals,

I recently jumped on board the scarlet deal to add a second camera. I bought a LCD to go with my epic, now I'm considering my options on the scarlet and can't decide between a Bomb EVF (no budget for OLED) or a second. For the people who have both!! What would you suggest? What pluses and drawbacks should I consider. The EVF would likely stay on the epic with a side handle.

Thanks for you thoughts in advance

It's all a question of personal preferences. I personally prefer the LCD (you can attach an eyepiece in front if it if you want.

I would at all costs always have a dedicated EVF eye-piece available. Even if you wait, get one in the future. The new OLED is amazing, I still think the old one is incredible as well. I have owned both.

The OLED is brighter, more contrasty (just look at the specs) but if you are going in and outta light you will not be able to trust what you see on an LCD -- my opinion.

Yes, and the histogram... I know how to read them, sounds like you do too. So in that case sure... I think you would be happiest with the EVF, but then again, who knows, personal preference. I will say that you can do wonders tweaking the settings on RED's cameras to adjust levels of so many different things to make either shooting experience very enjoyable.

No, Paul. It's bad advice, and out of date.
The shadows ( blacks) are black now.

If your car has blown a tire and is pulling to the left, the solution is not to keep driving pulling down on the right, trying to stay on the road.

Mark Toia edits and is there for the color grading. Maybe you are too.
As a professional DP, I'm not, so to alter metadata to make shooting possible with a bad display is crazy.

What would you use Mark?

I know my Bomb EVFs have been used maybe once on set. That's in 18 months.

In bright situations, I use a hood.
I own a 9.0 and a 5.6. Use the 9.0 where I can.
Thinking about setting up the monitors with an EPL.

Hopefully red will fix the Bomb.

I picked up one of the 'deal' scarlets as well - I have a 5"touch with the existing scarlet pkg that I own, and had been thinking about an EVF for the outdoor / handheld work that I do. So I ordered a Bomb Tested EVF from RED. I figure this will give me best of both worlds, and I have a bunch of DP6's that I can put n the cam for AC's / Directors to look at while using the EVF.

I'm not worried about the picture in the EVF, since I use the histograms, goal posts, and other tools for exposure - the EVF & monitor really are just for framing and reading the tools...

I really think the perceived image size is way to small in the EVF. If i look through a alexa viewfinder, i have the feeling that i'm looking at a huge screen in front of me. With the bomb, i have the feeling there is a little window somewhere in the back of the viewfinder after a black long tunnel. I prefer the LCD with hood, i'm able to see more on it. I think now the EVF is OLED, the next big improvement should be to make it feel as big as the alexa evf, that one is with no doubt the best out there.
