"The Distance Between Us" 《距離》- Toronto / Hong Kong shortfilm shot on Scarlet
Dear all,
I wanted to share my latest project, a shortfilm called "The Distance Between Us"(Chinese title: 《距離》). The film is about an investigation on identity and the story is about a young girl who's forced to accept a distant family, or having no one at all when the sudden death of her mother leaves her all alone. The film was am ambitious undertaking that takes place in Toronto and in Hong Kong.
The film was produced under an extremely small and tight budget (I cashed in ALL my airline miles to fly the 2 casts / DP / myself for the Hong Kong segment), and I'm very proud of what we were able to achieve - both logistically and cinematically!
The scarlet was the primary camera we used, there were a few situation that brought out the 5D (mainly lowlight run and guns). After much discussion with DP, we opted for a handheld style (especially in HK segment) and the shots came out surprisingly steady despite the RED (even with bare minimum accessories attached) being close to 5x heavier than the 5D, which is what my DP was used to.
We also had only just received the camera and out kit was quite bare. We had only 4x Red Brick... It was challenging at times, especially when we were unable to plug-in.
Here's the official trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQH9p2fiY9M) released under the first festival we are in, the Hong Kong Freshwave 2012 Film Festival:
Hope you enjoy it!
Lastly, I also wanted to take an opportunity to thank all the RED users and admins that had helped answer technical questions, and provided advice as I and my team continued to engage in more complex and difficult projects involving the RED cameras. Thank you!
Yours,
Michael MK Siu
