Hello everyone, it is 8:40pm and Red support is closed. I am shooting in Palm Springs for a feature film production.
Our Epic X is not powering up.
It powered up without a problem as soon as we arrived in set, but it self shut down while we were navigating the menu.
We tried to power it up again and it is not responding.

We tried with the grip battery, with the battery module and we the Epic AC power supply but no luck. We only use RED accessories and we have a light setup.
When connected to a source of power the power button turns red. If we press it we only see a white flash on the Epic LCD (same thing with EVF) and nothing else. No fan, no internal sound, no sign of being alive besides the initial white flash on the LCD/EVF.

This is what we tried:

- unplugging any accessory (LCD, EVF, Grip, Redmag, Redmote...) trying to power up brain only
- we tried to reset factory defaults by pressing the power button for 15-30 seconds
- we tried to use batteries as well as power adaptor

So far is still not booting up, even if it powered up normally only 20 minutes ago.

Can we force upgrade the firewire even if the camera is not booting up?
Just trying to understand if we should send everyone home.

Thanks in advance for your feedback

Hi Nima,

Something like this happened to me early on, Epic wouldn't boot up no matter what I did. I was able to upgrade the firmware and this corrected it. If it works, make sure you do a few dozen test shots before putting it back in action. Mine did a couple of odd things at first but has been rock solid for almost a year now.

Good luck!

I too have experienced this. Firmware reflash corrected.

Thanks for the quick reply.
How did you manage to upgrade the firmware?
Is there a way to force a booting in order to upgrade?
The camera is not powering up, and even with a SSD red mag (with force upgrade folder) the camera is still not showing signs of life, besides the red led light by the power button.

We tried to keep pressed the power button for about 30 seconds but it is still not working.

Thanks Oliver, I ama aware of the process. Problem is that the camera has to start up in oder to read files into the redmag.
The camera is not giving any sign of life, even with a redmag stuffed in it.

In my case, the camera did respond to having a new image on the SSD, despite otherwise seeming to fail its boot sequence. You may need to contact Red for their more expert advice if that's not working on your side. Let us know how it turns out!
