This is probably an extremely dumb question, but I just can't seem to find answers online anywhere:

Do you take stills in a separate mode from shooting video, or do you pull directly from video? In addition, how well does AF work if you're shooting something like sports?

yes you pull the stills directly from the R3D file within Reccine, there is a function that lets you export Tiff or DPX files.

Ok, so shooting 12fps at 5k more or less is giving you stills already, they just need to be extracted? And have you primarily used the AF function (if you have the Canon mount) or try and manually focus for most of your shoots when you know you're just pulling stills?

any footage you shoot on the epic or scarlet or red or any other camera for that matter gives you stills frames....12fps gives you 12 single frames per second, so from this one second selection in your timeline you could extract 12 individual frames out of your video footage....if you shoot 25 then its 25, 30 and so on.
you set the marker in the redcine timeline at the exact moment where you want the still frame to be extracted and click on the snapshot button which allows you to export TIFF or DPX files.

I do have the canon mount but i have never really used auto focus as i find it easier to focus manually for most work that i do....plus most of my lenses like the zeiss distagon for example dont have AF.
