Hi Everyone..

I'm shooting a couple of tests tomorrow with my Epic M and beer..

We would like to try some 300fps pouring, some drops falling and all the cliche footage you see in beer ads..

I'm only troubled about one thing: flicker

We have this lights available: 1 Arri M40 HMI, 2 Arri M18 HMI, 1 Arri T5kw, 1 Arri T2kw and a couple of 2K Tungstens, 2 Large Daylite Chimeras (135x180) and 1 Middle Size Daylite Chimera (90x120)

Do you think i'm ok with this lights in a controlled environment?? in your experience, should I have any troubles with flicker?

Thanks!! :D

As long as your frame rate and shutter speed are in synch with you power current, you should be good. In PAL land that means 50hz, so 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 should work alright. As a test on set close down your lens and point the camera around a beam of light to see if you see any pulsing.

Problem will be the hmi light ballasts and whether they are flicker free or not. At that high of speed flicker will be very noticeable if there is any.

thank you very much Matt!.. much appreciated.. :)

Yeah definitely look on a bigger monitor. The 5" compresses the image too small to really see the flickering. You might be tempted to say oh it looks good, then when you watch it on a 1080p monitor over 5" you say damn look at all that flicker. Same goes for viewing noise.

Also, since your just doing tests I suggest you shoot 100fps, 250fps, and 300fps as well as at several different shutter speeds for each. Then take them into post and see which one has the best look for you and the least amount of flicker and compression. That way when you do the real thing you'll have the confidence to know what works and what won't with this setup.

jejeje.. Chris we made a couple of tests today in the sun and we had a blast with water balloons and hot chicks at 300fps.. really good times in the office :)

We have a 17" HD Sony Luma SDI monitor that works really well with Epic.. just gorgeous images and very color accurate in our experience.. the Red Touch is fantastic for camera settings but i've been deceived more than once trying to pull focus (without the Edge tool) with it.. since then there's allways a bigger monitor around with me..

I just love how a guy named ALE is doing beer tests :-)

Umm...where is that footage? hehe :-)

Justin do you wanna read something funny??? there's an Ale club in Houston called "The Real Ale Houston".. the first time I saw that on twitter, i just couldn't help but ask my parents if they faked my identity.. footage to be posted here as a "thank you" gesture Chris!

If it comes down to it and you have a genny, you can utilize 3 phase power to your advantage and run an HMI from each of the 3 legs. You will be flicker free at virtually any frame rate.
