Hello, I'm looking to get my hands on a nice set of five to six super speeds. Individuals lenses considered.

18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 65mm, 85mm. I would like the full set, including the 65mm if possible.

I'd also consider MK II, nothing older please.

I will require the set to be evaluated by Matt and his team at Duclos Lenses in Los Angeles.
I will be glad to pay inspection fees.

Please e-mail me instead of PMing me.

Personally I am, but rentals there are a lot out there and less of the Super Speeds. I believe this should be our first set and upgrade from there.

Or unless I get a deal too good to pass on a set of UPs

Isn't 25-30k reasonable for a set of MK II's or III's? I've been seeing 42k-75k, broker price. At those prices, I might just be better served saving a few more dollars for an Ultra Prime set.

Any private sellers out there?

Thanks Matt. Appreciate you looking out Ryan.

I'm sticking with MK II or III only please.

lori has a set of exactly what you want...not cheap though but mint

She's charging the same price as New Ultra Primes. They are mint but definitely not worth that price. $55,000 maybe, not $75,000.

Anyone out there near LA?

Those are B Speeds, pre MKI. I'd stay away from those especially at that price. Rental demand for those is nonexistent. I saw a set of MKII's selling for $32,000, which are miles better than the B Speeds and they sold in one day.

I know the history of the mounts, the ergonomics, and the irises, from B Speed through to MK III. But isn't it true that the glass itself is identical from start to finish? Nothing was changed optically?

The coatings may be different on the b speeds and MKI's. I know the II and III are labeled T Coated, and I think the b speeds and mkI's might be multicoated. Not 100% sure though as I've only seen a set on a camera and footage of the weird bokeh. I believe there are also uncoated versions of the MKI's if I'm not mistaking. I only know rental demand is non existent on these models. The MKIII's are obviously the most sought after as they are the most advanced and tuned of the series.

Part of the problem with the B-Speeds is that they are coming up on the age where parts really break down and start to fail. Normally this isn't a big deal because a lens shop can order the replacement parts and install them. However, on the B-Speeds the manufacturer stopped supporting them. So in some cases, parts are very difficult to find or impossible.

Will, I would be very skeptical of anyone selling MKII Speeds for less than $35k

If those skeptical purchased lens for 35k had an eval at Duclos with a clean bill, would you still be skeptical?

By breaking down he means very aged, hence they are more likely to be in poor condition and lacking in replacement parts (They won't just fall apart unless they are dropped or poorly maintained). B-Speeds were pre MKI's and discontinued with the MKI Release... MKIII's were discontinued in the early 90's, so they are much more recent. MKII's and III's were more popular than the other versions and pretty much every lens tech can get parts and repair them. I believe even though they are discontinued you can send them into Arri and have them factory refreshed with a paint job and service (this is just from what I've seen 2nd hand so it's not 100% fact, but I did see a set of MKIII's that were just serviced and re-painted by Arri for sale a couple weeks ago)

My friend's set of "B" speeds just got overhauled by Duclos and I just used them for a music video, I was skeptical at first but they worked great, I wouldn't sell my Optimos for them but I wouldn't dismiss them out of hand either. They are every bit as good as a MKII or III set in the final image, you'll get a few looks from your ACs but if your budget is $25K it's pretty much your only option.
