In the market for Super Speeds MK II or MK III and finding the climate more expensive then the advice I've received so far. Thanks for double checking my numbers and for any friendly buying advice.

25-30k is reasonable, no?

Seeing broker sets mostly in the 42-75k range. If Ultra Primes could be purchased at 72k a set, why would anyone pay 75k for super speeds?

Most sets are 5 lens sets, without the 65mm.

Thanks

I was offered 60k for my MKIII's which I thought was an amazing offer) ... But don't want to part with them.

The big thing is, what do you replace them with? that are also small & F1.2 - T1.3 bright.

Ultra primes... ? F1.9 getting heavy...
Master primes... ? bright but heavy has hell and super pricey...
RED primes, 1.9 and big and heavy... but well priced.

Im sure there is more....

I just belive that Ziesss made those super speeds so long ago, bright lightweight, little gems... but discontinued them.? seems odd.

Yeah, no kidding. "little gems" and very popular if you wanna rent em. So what's a fair price on a set of 5?

The glass had too much lead content, so like tube TV's could no longer be made after a certain date. The final stock was reduced by 50% so they were not in huge demand at the time.

I'd say the market is demanding anywhere between $35K and 45K depending on condition.

Yeah, thats what I say. I've seen MKII sets for sale on here for $32,000, so an MKIII set can't be any more than $45,000. It seems like these days people are charging ridiculous amounts to see what idiots will purchase the glass. If they are more than $50,000, you are being ripped off. They bought them originally for around $30,000. new.

I just saw a set of MK1 on Visual Products listed for $32,000. Thats overpriced for the I if you ask me.

From the position of used equipment brokers....

S16 lenses? Worth half what they were a few years ago.
S16 bodies? Total massacre. I saw an Aaton LTR with new motor, new board and service sell for $1,000 on ebay last week. That's a little more than what the wooden handle costs.
Classic expensive accessories like motors, ground glass, video tap, batteries etc--

This is the price we get for slaughtering the mom and pop camera service business, replacing amateur S16 and 35 with digital.

If I were them, I'd charge $50,000 for a set of Superspeeds, because a commercial director like Mark Toia (who was probably shooting film a decade ago) would pay for them... so I can continue to pay my employees and feed my kids...

Besides all that, it's supply and demand. There are only so many sets left, and there are lot more kids like us shooting than there were a decade ago.

How long have the prices been that high? When were the days of 25-30k for a set? Doesn't seem like it was that long ago.

2 years ago I remember they went for that. Cut off the supply of anything, double the demand, and count yourself lucky it only went up 25%

I remember seeing sets of 5 or 6 for 20-30K. someone I knew paid that much for a set of 5 MKIII.

Another operator I worked with picked up the last new set Arri ever held in inventory--lucky German bastard. Munich called him, he booked a plane ticket home, bought the last set of superspeeds ever made.

I always bite my tongue when I see a good deal on either speeds, standards or panchros because each project deserves the look that suits it... if I had the cash and knew I could pay them off within a year or two, I'd snag one or the other for sure.
