  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Need help getting Mercury Playback on a GTX 680 on Mountain Lion 10.8.1 Hackintosh.
I added the the "GeForce GTX 680" to the cuda_supported_cards.txt file. Also Ran Multibeast 10.8.0 OpenCL Patch and the 10.8.0 Patched GeForceGLDriver Support. But the option is greyed out when I loaded Premiere. Ill check it out on the Windows 7 side tomorrow when i get adobe installed on windows.

Just got my build very stable and eveything is working.

GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UP5 Dual Thunderbolt,
CORSAIR Professional Series CMPSU-650HX 750W,
EVGA GeForce GTX 680+ 4096 MB GDDR5,
NZXT HAVIK CPU Cooler with Dual 140MM Fans,
Intel Core i7-3770K Quad-Core Processor 3.5 GHz 4 Core LGA 1155,
TP-Link PCI Express Adapter,
Corsair Vengeance 16 GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600MHz,
Two SanDisk Extreme SSD 120 GB SATA 6.0 Gb-s2.5-Inch Solid State Drives. (for OS only)
Sony AD-7280S-0B 24x SATA Internal DVD+/-RW Drive (Black)

I want to build a similar system for dual boot PC /MAC use. Would love to hear how yours performs.

Thanks

Looks like a nice setup... needs more RAM! ;)

The Sandy Bridge-EP platform has no CPU power management on OS X which means that the CPUs won't reach their maximum clock speeds, limiting the performance badly, and they cannot be overclocked.

The fastest Hackintosh you can build right now is a 12-core with an EVGA SR-2 motherboard and Xeon X5690s and then overclocking.

Nick is correct. The Xeon E5 platforms are pretty much dead in the water for OSX. Sure, they're still fast in some benchmarks, but it's difficult to get the CPUs throttled up. Several aspects of the chipset are not supported well. Apple doesn't offer such a system, so they haven't built the proper support into the OS.

The SR-2 Xeon build is an OK way to go, but I don't know if I would bother with it at this point. You're buying into old tech. All things considered, I think the Hackintosh route holds little value and is somewhat self-defeating. And I say that even though I feel Apple has the superior OS and I prefer working in OSX over Windows any day. The reality of it is you need a PC to utilize the latest and most powerful hardware options. That's always been the case, it's just more apparent now with Apple skipping over this iteration of the Xeon platform. Oddly enough, it's a decision that actually makes a lot of sense, but it's not so great for consumers looking for an upgrade at this time.

As for the SR-2 and overclocking, there's little you can do. Xeons are internally multiplier-locked, so all you can do is fiddle with the external clock speed and voltage parameters.

Doing some tests. Its running great, Very stable. Ive had ZERO crashes in premiere so far. Going to be ordering another 16 gigs of ram. Red files work great, edits like butter I'm glad i built what i built. Pretty easy to get it running. You just need a lot of patience and time. Until its been running for 6 months strong, I would NOT recommend it as a primary machine.

It out performs my 2 x 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC, with Dual NVIDIA Quadro 4000 2048 MB. And it cost me around $1,700. Thats so cheap for a capable editing machine.

I knew going into it that the processors would not be at their max potential. My hope is that as Mountain Lion progresses so will processor support. It Geek benches at 18,000+ on PC and 14,000+ on Mac.

Hey Kyle,

have you used the TB ports for any external storage devices (like WD TB drives / G-RAID TB / PROMISE R4/6?) also... have you tried any IO devices like the AJA IO XT. i'm really interested in your feedback. thanks.

ps. the T-TAP box should be shipping soon so if that works natively it would be super cool. ok.

Thunderbolt works only when I boot up. I've used a goflex TB drive to test it. Works fine buts its not hot swappable, yet. Guys on the forums are working on that. Ill let you guys know more when I've tested it more. Also the gtx680 is pretty quiet. the whole machine is much quieter than my MacPro.

Im tempted to pick up the blackmagic TB I/O to see if it works but I would need to get another flanders.

Still no errors, everything is very stable.
