I have heard a few times that the real stops are less then was declared.
I have heard from one man which work with Alexa and Epic that indeed Alexa has a true 11,5 stops as declared and Epic only 5,5 when declared 13,5 plus 5 HDR it is 18,5. Is it can be true? So Alexa is better then Epic?

Alexey,

Geez, if all of the RED cameras out there were just vaporware, this thread might be valid. Truth is that is not the case.

Take a look at the films actually "Shot on RED" - if those looks are obtained with only 5.5 stops of DR, Jim must have some unknown alien technology at work.

Proof is in the pudding so to speak. Anyone only seeing 5.5 should take off their fashion sunglasses in the theatre before watching another film and speaking or spreading FUD - then again, I would assume that you can consider anything else they say to be suspect....

5.5 stops is being generous. It's the iPhone that has 18. 5 stops.

Why would you even listen to such a ridiculous claim, knowing it to be false? If anyone said something like that to me, I would immediatly question their opinion on pretty much everything. I have no respect for people who enjoy spreading FUD. It's a sign of fear and weakness. Let RED stand on its own two feet and accomplishments. It's the reason we are on this forum because they have proven themselves time and again.

For someone at this late stage to say something so out-and-out false tells me they have no clue about much of anything remotely related to cinema equipment. But then again, some people believe that we never landed on the moon or that Elvis is still alive.

It is easy to be glib, without understanding the true underlying problem. I'm speaking from personal experience, having worked in Ukraine and other markets in Eastern Europe. Those places predominatly operate, based on frequent pronouncements of local, self anointed "tech gurus". They would often make silly claims, like 5,5 stops of Epic's dinamic range, which then would instantly become local gospels. Producers and other people in power would then use those crazy statements, as proof. At that point it is difficult, if not impossible to counter that FUD.
This is why the perception and easily obtained facts about Red technology are so important.

I shoot with booth a lot, as a DP and a Gaffer. Both can handle light verturly the same. ALEXA might have a little more room in the highlights, but you can't beat RAW. If you can't get your RED camera to match or come close within a stop to the ALEXA, then your lighting is wrong.

Hey Mark, I have proof we never went to the moon. Read this. http://www.thespacereview.com/article/184/1

And for your information, Elvis is most likely still alive. Read this. http://www.elvis-is-alive.com/

Once again Steve, you are a beacon of truth, a font of knowledge. :yesnod:
You'll also be happy to know that I have developed a new Refulgent Lens™ for the iPhone that helps the iphone surpass the dynamic range of both Alexa and RED Epic. I'll try to get test footage up soon.

Sorry guys, I am not a professional in these technical questions, the meter is not in Ukraine or Eastern Europe people are the same in the whole world in video production:) (besides Taliban maybe, they against movies:) I just have heard once Alexa is better, ok I think everybody can have their own opinion, then I have heard again Alexa is better from guy from production, who much better professional then me, I haven't contain myself and begun asked a lot of questions and got answer about these true 11,5 and 5,5 stops and I said that much more movies shot on Red whatever.

On a serious note, often what is talked about when comparing these two cameras is highlight latitude and the way they roll off. Suffice it to say, neither camera has equalled film in this area but both companies are working hard to improve in this category and have achieved quite a bit. I would imagine we will see big improvements in the next generation of cameras/sensors from both. But in the meantime, as long as you work within the capabilities of each and utilize things like HDR when appropriate, you can achieve great results TODAY as has been evidenced by the many projects that have been shot with these cameras. They will continue to evolve.
