Hard to believe that I was lucky enough to be there for Red Day Zero.

Hard to believe that after so many years of shooting my passion for image making could be so powerfully reignited.

I tip my hat to the Madman and the Red Team.

I also must mention what a joy it has been to be a part of the RedUser community, I've met some fantastic people.

Here here! And many more to go! I might have gotten on a tad bit late, but I've definitely learned so much about production from Red, this forum, and many that I've met from Reduser.

I too tip my hat to the Madman and the Red Team.

Actually I miss those first days, everything was so different around here, and Reduser was a true family made up of hard core users and believers, were I met 100's of friends and we celebrated the technology and our friendship, thru collaborations, and tests we did at the various venues, great times have past, and some new ones might still come, even so it seems that today they are many more party poppers in this community then we would like to have, but hopefully they'll move on, or they'll come to also love the community as much as we do and stop pooping all over it.

Fact is that 5 years have passed and RED has really done an incredible JOB, looking back at when I first put the 3k deposits of the 3 Red One cameras, and were we are today, WOW, what a Progress!!

I look back with joy and look forward with anticipation of what is to come... ;)

I think it was either February or perhaps March of 2007 when I heard about RED on DVX user. I followed a link to the RED website and filled out a questionnaire asking things like "what HD cameras do you own?" I answered I owned two Sanyo Xacti models and waited to hear back from the website. Nothing ever came. I assumed that being an Xacti owner branded me as someone not suited for RED ownership. That really hurt my feelings but I persevered and ended up joining REDUSER a few months later, and eventually scraped enough together to put down a deposit on a Red One and brimming with confidence I could find the cash to eventually pay for them, soon deposited for another. Since then, RED has been that massive Red hole that sucks my money into their universe in a swirling mass of gravity that allows none of it to escape. But in return I have received visions of what is possible and over time, the confidence I can eventually achieve the goals I've set of turning my ideas into content.

I have never felt buyers remorse for even a nanosecond.

I remember that day 5 years ago like it was 5 weeks ago. Amazing how much we have progressed and at light speed in that time.
I tip my hat to the bold few that had the faith to believe in RED from day one and to all those who have joined along the way. It is such an amazing thing to watch this giant international family grow and prosper.
Here's to future decades of progressive dominance and abundant creativity for all of us...

Sean is a perfect example of someone I've had the privilege to get to know and also a prime example of one of the traits that makes RED great - Jim's ability to select people who shared his vision and sensibilities. Jim has been derided in other forums for the "you're on my list" comments but he understands how critical it is to have a group of people pulling in the same direction who want to treat others the way they want to be treated themselves. No camera or company is perfect, but searching for solutions rather than just banging on people is a much better way to make progress.

It was the beginning of a juggernaut. I wasn't on board that early - although 3 years on, it seems like so much has continued to happen. I think things are going to be even more exciting going forward!!

And I have to say, Blair ... that of all the people I've met through the RedUser community, you are one of the coolest ... it's always a pleasure working with you and hearing what you have to say ... intelligent, well informed and thoughtful .. a true professional in everything you do.

Cheers mate!

I haven't posted here much in the past year - been way busy out doing production work. But this is the kind of thread I can't resist!

I've happily been a part of the extended "Red family" since 2005. As one of the very few other people fortunate enough to be there on 8/30/07 to take delivery of a Red One camera let me just say this - It was a great honor to be in on the absolute ground floor of the adoption of Red's products! Obviously Blair, Mark, and the others there that day will echo that same sentiment...

The combination of Jim's extraordinary forward vision, his gift for team building, and then Red Team's phenomenal hard work, has radically and irreversibly enhanced the entire motion media industry!

My heartfelt thanks to Jim and the entire Red Team...yes, every one of you.

I can remember that step of trepidation as I plunged $1000 into the void back in 2007 (I believe) based on a spec sheet, on promises and the track record of a guy that spoke volumes. Almost two years later I received the prize, a camera that rocked not just my World but those of so many talented folks, most of whom gather here at one point or another. Bones of contention may be chewed from time to time, how else is a forum with so much artistic flair supposed to thrive? There will be arguments, differences of opinion, the odd insult or three but in the end of the day it's all been in defense of the myriad of ways in which artists manipulate a product in order to share their, at times, very unique vision. A product that just keeps getting better.

I had to let RED #954, aka Deep C, go for personal reasons but now am back, courting an EPIC idea and plans to once more join the ranks of those who steadfast believe in the path that Jim has dared to carve. So I join in the cap doffing, the salutations and camaraderie as we steer into the next five years, waiting with baited breath as to what that may bring. Knowing Jim it's gonna be something so damned audacious that the world will once again herald his lunacy in suggesting it might just work!

Best of luck all and to Jim, cheers for the ride thus far.

Mark.

Hey Ketch,

There are more RED newbies that love this community than those pooping. I see it everyday on reduser. Not to mention all those fans, users, owners that are silent and busy shooting. This is the first time that i feel at home within a Brand, if you know what i mean... I love your enthusiasm, madman's, ted's, jarred's, toia's, lowe's, kilgroe's, etc... You guys are the pillars of this whole thing.

I heard of RED for the first time back in 2008. Bookmarked the website. Continuously tracking any info. Bought my Epic instead of investing in a house in april of this year. When i placed my order, i had never even touched or seen a RED One. I when to L.A. to do a REDucation but it was sold out. I met a fantastic guy called Richard Salazar who introduced me more to the system. I went to the RED Studios, visited religiously the Store, attended to a course in the studios with some top dogs of the industry, met Ted Schilowitz... I went after that to NAB, waited inline to see THE LOOM, heard and saw Jim for the first time. I wanted to exchange some words with him but i didn't because i didn't want to appear as a fanboy.

I'm not a fanboy. I'm a REDman.

Looking back, i'm strongly believing that the MOST IMPORTANT investment of my life will pay and nurture all my creative ambitions.

All this happened within 4 month. I'm sure that there are A LOT of other "newbies" like me.
We are here as long as RED keeps his ADN.

Yes Victor, fortunately the poppers are few in between... ;)

Either way, this community is OUR community and no one can take this away from us... Poppers will come and go, we are here to stay, and those like you that are always ready to give kind words for what we do are the ones that make is it worth continue ot post what we do and why we do it... ;)

News from Jim of the Red ONE I believe came out in 2006, which later started shipped in 2007.

For me I will never forget hearing that first bit of news and then watching the whole 35mm revolution take place. I had been shooting with a PS Technik mini35 adapter and DV cams since around 2002 to achieve my 35mm film-like style shoots, and ironically the Red One at that time would cost around the same price. ~$17.5k.

Actually the public news from Jim Jannard about Red first broke in early 2006, and the very first batch of Red One cameras, serial numbers 6 through 25, were picked up by the new owners at Red's Orange County office on August 30, 2007. I know these details for sure - I did the first magazine published article about Red, an interview I did with Jannard published in Studio Monthly, April 2006 issue.
Link: http://www.studiodaily.com/2006/04/first-look-at-red-2/

I was then at Red's O.C. office on 8/30/07 and received the first of my four Red One cameras that night - serial number 0008.

The above are accurate facts of Red history. Super exciting times back then ;)

Wow! I had not seen that article before. Interesting to see the conception-thinking of the Red One. Also helps to evaluate just how far the Epic has progressed from that original blueprint.

Thanks for the link Steve. Great interview, as well.

Thanks! It was way fun to do that interview with Jim - just Jim, me, and my wife Pam were in the conference room at Oakley Headquarters for that. By that time (2006) I had already known Jim for about twenty-one years so it was a casual, but fascinating conversation that day. Since then Jim's forward thinking camera concepts have interjected some incredible energy, options, and competition into the motion media industry!

You can tell from that interview that Red One was a sequential work in progress. Many of those originally planned specifications didn't make it into the final spec sheet for the shipping Red One cameras. That's quite natural for a forward thinking company like Red. They "think out loud" during the development process, but nothing is "caste in concrete" until it has been thought through many times.

The process was the same with Epic and Scarlet too - many of the early mentioned concepts and specifications were changed before those cameras were finalized - again, a totally natural evolution.
