  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey Folks - Recently I found myself wanting to figure out how much my Scarlet would weigh in a steadicam configuration and started weighing things. While I was at it, I decided to keep going and weigh a whole bunch of bits and pieces. Since RED and various other sites don't really put this info in their online catalogs, I thought it might be of some interest to others. So, in the interest of sharing trivial information, here's what I found so far:

NOTE: All weight were taken with a $25 digital scale and, before I realized I could change the scale to ounces or kg, I weighed them all in pounds. Hence the decimal numbers.

Scarlet Weights

Scarlet X Body + Side SSD Module + Al Canon Mount = 4.84 lbs.
RED DSMC Nodular Assault Plate Pack = .42
REDmote = .46
RED Side Handle = .90
RED 5" Touchscreen = 1.2
RED Module Adaptor = .63
RED Quad Battery Module = 1.66
RED 8" Dovetail = .5
REDvolt = .58
REDvolt XL = 1.5
RED Brick = 2.38 lbs.
RED Matte Box (with both filter inserts and the 110mm adaptor) = 23.5 oz

WC Top Plate = .4
WC A-Box = .5
WC Handle - rubber (side) = .4
WC Handle - rubber (top) = .4
WC Adaptor Top = .15
WC Side Plate / Right Rear = .18
WC 100mm Nato Safety Rail = .06
WC LW Top Mount = .28
WC Easy Stick = .16
WC Easy Plate = .12

GiniRig Rib (with 2 screws) = .18
GiniRig Bottom Plate (w/ 2 mounting screws) = .42
That's all I have so far. I'll update it when I get other parts and pieces. And feel free to add your own info to this thread, f you are so inclined.

Regards.

not to side track this, but I'm curious what is the lightest anyone has been able to strip the RED Epic/Scarlet down to, for most people this may seem like overkill, but there are uses for it...

I think the lightest would be:
Brain/SSD/AL Canon - 4.84
Side Handle - .9
REDvolt - .58
Touch - 1.2 (how much lighter is EVF?)

Which is ~7.5lbs... PLUS lens & REDmag... Cheap stills glass weighs next to nothing, but it'd probably look like ass. Decent lenses (Zeiss, Liecas or even Canon Ls) weigh substantially more. So it's probably still about ~10lbs, and it'd only last 20-30mins (redvolt) and give you barely any support (shoulder rig or what-not.) 10lbs is a lot to hold out in front of you for more than 5mins...

Needless to say, those coming from 2-4lbs DSLRs (with lens, and battery that lasts 1.5hours) will be surprised at how much heavier it is. Not only that, but because it weighs so much, you need a decent tripod as on sticks it'd be insanely top-heavy (compared to a DLSR).

I was even considering replacing some of the metal exterior of the scarlet body with plastic to cut weight down, again not practical for most applications, does that violate warranty?

Uhhhhh yes. It does.

I wish they used magnesium for the case. 3lb camera.
But a lot of people actually want the camera to be heavy.... you just can't win.
In cameras heavy = perceived value ( they could always add weight for steadiness ... is this camera a toy ...)
In Race cars, bikes, planes, rockets, heavy = no good.

regardless can't complain with 4.5 lbs for a 4K camera, I'm just brainstorming how to get that weight down as much as possible

Just added this:

RED Matte Box (with both filter inserts and the 110mm adaptor) = 23.5 oz

I'd say any practical setup for production with a Nikon or Canon wide-mid zoom is going to put you at 10-12 pounds unless you get crazy about the grams or ounces. There's a certain point where there's critical mass that makes a camera practical on a real working set. A 12-15 pound cinema production camera that can shoot roughly the equivalent 2-4000 foot plus loads of 35mm equivalent quality, is nuts beyond belief. Forget the ounces and count the blessings of how miraculously light it is!

To piggy back off of Mike P's response...

We stripped the volt and simply tethered the Touch and Brick below as counters. At the same time, used a Terra Deck cube (8 oz.) also tethered below for an iPad stream for our puller. Anything up to 85mm CP2's, I can sprint with this set up.

Check this out...
For something even cooler...We're also tech heads (Of course it helps my wife is a consumer electronics Researcher:-) Been playing with Google's Android based Heads up Display glasses. I can send a signal to the glasses from my Terra Deck Cube, therefore I can eliminate my LCD, providing a parallel eye line as the lens. This way, my line of sight is now at a logical angle, resulting in an increased control of the steadicam.

Terry, do you use the Red matte box with canon lenses? If so,with which ones and how do you set it up? Rodless?

I do use it. At this point, I have all my lenses set up with 80mm outer rings and have a 110 to 80 mm adaptor on the matte box. So, yes, no rods for now. I plan on getting the rod adaptor from RED at some point. I think that will give me a little more flexibility.

Is it safe to say that the Sliding Top Handle and 100mm Swat Rail is close to the x parts in weight?

Sorry that I'm hijacking the weight thread :)
Thanks for the info Terry! Did you get all the 80mm outer rings from Duclos? Seems hard to get these here in Germany. Especially with a wide ring. Most are just tiny screw in adapters. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.

I am going to bump this thread as I have seen some folks as about weights recently. Perhaps I'll try to add some more things when I get a chance.

OK - just added RED Brick at 2.38 pounds.
