  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How smart is your dog?

Very cool dog. You can see the smarts in the eyes. Like that dog that won Britain's Got Talent, or maybe it was America's Got Talent - you could just see the brains behind the eyes.

Or, as my inlaws like to say - 'You have a fully-realized dog'.

Must be a Husky thing because mine is the same way. It goes both ways in my house, she can read my mind too! The best one is when she puts her chin on the couch asking permission to jump up and join me.

We have a very sweet German shepherd / golden retriever mix pound mutt. very smart dog that understands us and communicates well, but he falls into the negotiator category. Ask him to do something and he gives you a look that says "What's in it for me?" Street smart stray and consummate scavenger. Once came home with a fresh two-pound pack of partially thawed venison taken from God knows where.

couple of short poems:

I taught my dog the set, and down she set
I taught my dog to lay, and she lay right down
I taught my dog to speak
She struggled with that a bit
But when she finally go the hang of it
She said,"You twit! It's sit and lie.
Baxter Black cowboy poem.

Do not infer that I purr because you pat
You pat because I purr
I am the cat
Do not forget that

I had a very touching experience last night. Kami - my Husky - finally got some revenge on this ignorant little chihuahua that lives some doors down. It's never on a leash and pretty much runs free all day (as do many of the dogs here, since folks seem to think a leash is cruel and unusual punishment) and it likes to sit outside our gate and harass the shit out of Kami.

So last night we were on out last walk of the day when this butthead chihuahua comes dashing out and attacks Kami. Well it took all of 3 seconds to change its mind and off it ran with a good chomp to remember the moment. Now ordinarily I send Kami to her time-out room when she does this, but in this case it was wholly justified. Kami wasn't sure, and as we walked she kept turning to look at me, and had a smile on her face as bright as the moon. Then she stoped and faced me, and I knelt and she put her paws on my shouldes and gave me a hug.

She just needed reassurance that she wasn't in trouble, and it was a really sincere hug, and by far more sincere than those holiday hugs you get from visiting family.

I was a really cool moment. I really dig my dog.

My dog enter in my life in 1999, he was a 6 month old Scottish terrier.
Since that very moment he shared my life every where, even at work.
On set, in the editing room, at projection test in theater even at some important business meeting.
At the age of 3 while I was working for a TV channel in Paris where dogs weren't allowed,
A good friend exceptionally took care of him for the day.
When back from the journey my friend embarrassed did announce me the dog disappeared in 3 minutes time while he was into a shop.
The days passed and the dog didn't reappear.
During that period, I just realized how much this creature was important in my life.
He was like my shadow always in my angle of view.
During a really long period each time a friend saw a Scottish Terrier alone in the street of Paris, I received a phone call.
And each time I could, I use to rush to the place describe.
One year later a woman called on my mobile phone and asked me if I did lost a dog.
He was hanging around in my district area, and the tattoo helped her to find me back.
I will never forget that day, and how happy the dog was to find me back.
Now he's almost 13 years old and for a long time he showed some sequel from it's kidnapping.
So to answer to the thread question,
yes I think my dog is really smart, because he succeed after a year to escape from his condition and find his way back home.

I love my dog aka Mingus

Just got back home from some time spent living in LA, took the dog to the beach yesterday and it was perfection
We had a dog with a bit of your dog breed in him. He was a really smart dog especially when it was food related. He passed away two years ago now. This extra low light shot was done more than 4 years ago with our freshly arrived Red M. Malcolm was a really brave bastard.

Yeah Dobermans are top 5 for intelligence, apparently. Can be very clever when they want to be. Though sometimes i do have to wonder.
Last summer i was walking mine on the very beach pictured above and he managed to chase down and kill a 4 foot long Dugite, to my horror. Thats one of Australia's most deadly snakes so i rushed him to the vet fearing he might of got bitten.. not a scratch on him. I guess you'd call that brave. Or maybe just breeding. His mother lived in the Kimberly region of Western Australia and despite taking on every snake that entered her backyard for years on end she ended up dying of old age.

Well I wish I was more intelligent. I should have looked closer on the labels of the dog treats I got for Kodi Bear my Cane Corso. He is in the hospital going on 3 days now after eating chicken treats made in China. Vomiting diarrhea and bleeding were the main symptoms. We could sure use your prayers! Please be aware of products from Canyon Creek Ranch, and Dogswell as thousands of dogs have gotten sick and many have died. I have tried to get Petco to pull the products from the shelves, but they care more about money than doing the right thing. My poor baby has been through too much. First shot by a sick neighbor 32 times with a high power pellet gun, and now poisoned by tainted dog treats from China. I'm not big on vengeance, but the people letting companies get away with this need a really good ass kicking!

Please keep Kodi Bear in your prayers.

Thanks!

Dave
