Black Magic Design Cinema Camera - update

Very interesting.

How come BMC managed to get a working Scarlet in under a year, while it took Red 4 years to figure out they couldn't deliver on their promise?

the specs don't actually match the original scarlet concept... let me name what i don't like about it first:

No interchangeable mount, no PL mount natively, doesn't do 3k or 4k... no over cranking....which really kind of sucks...small sensor...

what i do like: price, features relative to price, non proprietary recording media...raw..

Take a closer look at the cameras and engineering, and you will see. I also wonder if the constant demand by the 3k scarlet users for everything under the sun, but only for $3k might have scared RED off. I honestly cannot say for sure. Doubt I will ever know.

I think the same argument that was made prior to the Scarlet being released can be made here as well...

Until its actually released and tested to breaking, nobody actually knows how well it holds up. I think the people who were upset at the abandonment of the Fixed Scarlet program / 2/3 Scarlet program might find that this is a good alternative at the price, but possibly not in the resolution

Only time will tell.

The BMCC is repackaging multiple technologies that BMD already had in house. Off the shelf sensor and hardware for the most part. Must say the image quality is looking pretty good for 2k/1080p at the price of a DSLR. From an interview the development time for the BMCC is more like three years.

I think the Digital Bolex will be a more practical and flexible all around field camera for a bit more money.

Everything about Scarlet was pretty much ground up custom hardware from sensor to ASICS. The camera was working, the lens killed it as it would not hold focus on zoom according to Jarred. I would have been very happy with a simple PL mount version.

I'd hardly call the Black Magic a "working Scarlet". From what early feedback I've heard, it doesn't perform great in the field. The rolling shutter is supposed to be quite problematic.

Cause RED decided to make something better....

Red did what best suited their program. I don't fault them for that. They have their hands full as is.

But I would have preferred the 2/3" Scarlet with 120fps at 3k over the S35 Scarlet even if it were close to the same price.

If RED came out with a 2/3" I prob would of gone REDone MX. But I would like to see a 2/3" Scarlet as another option with the s35 scarlet. There's still a market out there for 2/3" cameras like broadcasting and documentary. The Black Magic camera seems like a good alternative to what the 2/3" scarlet could of been. Except for the internal battery, one mount, fixed screen, etc.

I had a play with it at NAB... All i can say is this.... PLASTIC TOY.
People will purchase it however, because it's cute and it's cheap. And it shoots multiple formats and takes different lenses... Ergonomically, its a disaster.
But hey, if it shoots nice pictures, who really cares how cheap and crazy it is. :)

I feel its a GH2 Killer. And have you used a gh2? Talk about a toy. I think third party cages/rigs and battery systems will make this a tool thats worth using on the right projects. I would love to play with one and see how it performs. But im still in love with the scarlet. Even more so when the Dragon comes out.

Yes - I think the BMC will end up being a crash cam or B cam (when there's not another RED camera on set).

At the price, it's a no-brainer (less than my Bomb EVF) - LOL.

But, it's being hailed as the next big thing (RAW for the no-budget crowd)... so it'll be interesting to see what caveats the system comes with (from the already noted ergonomics and build quality) - through to rigging/camera support right through to lens choice (watch the lens/FOV sensor crop 'debate' rage on - LOL) plus a more complex post for users to wrap their heads around.

When they're out in the wild - and teh dust has settled... it'll be interesting to see what the BMC can really do (and deliver on).

I like the way the lamps clip in the examples. Very soft. Early to say but colors / skin seem very nice too in these exmaples. Might just get one to complement my Scarlet since it comes with resolve 9..
