GROUP BUY For Epic/Scarlet Rain Cover

Hello - just ordered and paid for the rain cover - Im ORDER #2

Got a feature coming up soon which is set in the rain so this will be needed :o) - that and all the bad weather the UK has been having lately i will need it anyway.

Group buys don't mean anything if we don't know what we're ordering. Interested, but need a LOT more photos or video please.

Also not to be picky, but you are not running a group buy according to your post, you are running a discount to the first 50 buyers. A group buy is when the vendor agrees to a discount ONLY if 50 people order. In your case, according to what you wrote, the first fifty will get the discount regardless if 50 order, or 20 order.

That's not a group buy. But don't feel bad... Your way is BETTER, your offering the discount with no required minimums !

From the pictures I can't see how they worked around fan exit. ?

Below is Elaine's response you your question. Evidently she has solved the problem of allowing the camera to breathe.

"I have a drawstring gathering on top of the rain cover, around the base of the monitor cap which is close to the venting.

I added a bib to cover that area, so one could loosen the drawstring (underneath) to allow some of the heat to come out, while
protecting the rain from coming in."

I respectfully disagree with you Jay. You're ordering a custom fabricated rain cover for the Epic/Scarlet. I've included a photo and a description of the rain cover. If you do a bit of research on this forum, you can learn more about this product. It is highly reviewed. People who own it, love it. Perhaps some owners of the cover can chime in here.

Also, this IS a Group Buy. The group is the first 50 buyers. If you order after the initial 50, you are not part of the "group"... And yes, this is a much better way to do a group buy. The past few group buys have gone completely awry.

Need to agree with Carey on this one!

Excellent approach for a Group Buy - much better than any before.
Seems like it is time to redefine Group Buy. Take this approach and all of that posturing and squabbling becomes a piece of history.

He is also right about prior threads - such as: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?67712-Scarlet-Epic-raincoat

Besides REDUser, Jon Fauer mentioned it in Film & Digital Times - Good references all around.

But, every other post or reference I have seen on this product had a price listed of $ 250 (plus shipping), not $ 295.
Hmmm...
Any indication when the price increase took place? Or is this a "Last Chance" to buy in at $ 250?

Edit: This "Group Buy" mentions extensions included - believe the prior listed sale pricing was $ 250 standard, $ 275 with extensions...

Carey,

You are correct in that I have not done a lot of research in other threads on this product.. Call me lazy, I don't want to run around looking for the information.. But bottom line, you're right, if there's info on this in other threads and everyone knows about it but me, then I'll need to shut on on this point.

As for the "group buy" as you call it, and redefining the meaning of the word as Brian suggested... Ok.. You can try but your new definition will not apply to the vendors most likely.. They will look at this as a one off discount, and the numbers will reflect that.

Example:

Up to now the "old school" group buys (Which I have run) mean I go to a place like ARRI and say, how much are your mattboxes. Mr. ARRI replies "$XX.XXX" I say ok what's the best discount you can give on that? They look at their profit per piece and say I can do this much off. Then I come back with "Ok how much can you do if I PROMISE to purchase 20 of them all at once?" Now we're looking at a VOLUME discount which is a whole "nother" animal. They are no longer at a per piece discount, but a gross number based on a number of units. They reply "well if you order 20 then I can give you THIS much off" Usually when you start talking about a "group buy" you run into resistance cause they don't want more than one order.. They prefer ONE ORDER of 20.. You see, for the volume discount to work they have to be 100% sure they will get their 20 orders. This is where the "work" comes in, and sometimes it can get a little complex as you noted. But the discount is usually worth it if everyone is doing it right.

In your case your vendor is taking a risk. Now PERHAPS this person is OK with the gamble of giving you a volume discount even though there is no promise they will get 50 orders, but most of the vendors I work with (And there are a lot of them) will not give a volume discount without an promise that they will get the number promised. I have succeeded in this process every time I have done it, except once.

Now if you want to disagree with me on this fine.. My definition does not matter a hill of beans. What matters is what the person SELLING it thinks, and how much they are willing to discount, and what motivates them. In my history of doing this, I cannot get the same discount when I do not promise a certain number of sales, vs the discount I get When I say, "we will not put the orders through, until you get this many units". If you are able to get volume discounts with no promise of volume, then good for you, I know a LOT of people who will want to hire you tomorrow morning! Myself included! :)

Everyone does their thing differently.. You have a process that works for you, and other's do it differently. In the end, it's just about whatever works for everybody. Horses for courses.

Here is Elaine's response to your inquiry about the price change:

"Initially the cover was 250.00. It came only with a prime extension. Epic users were ordering the zoom extension seperately, so I decided
to add it in with the package. Then I added the bib piece, which I felt was necessary, as described in my last response.
So adding 2 pieces, I added 45.00 to the cover, which for the work is a deal for them. Please pass this on to Redusers."
