  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED has been defined...

I don't know how this suddenly turned into a "why Red is better than Apple" thread. I simply replied to the post about a CEO showing a lot of confidence in his company's products. That's all.

Pay a ridiculous amount of money for less resolution, bigger and havier camera with a workflow that seems easy while is just fooling everyone into a lazier work. Or just add more money (alot more) to get even more weight to carry and not even get close to the 5K res.

All that to able to say that you are using a 100 years old brand that never got envolved into digital world until they realized that other people with a lot of will wanted to change the game, the market, the world and my life completely.

Mike, personally I was just using your post as a segue to pointing out that RED does business the right way... that is, they are in business with their customers for the financial betterment of their customers, while Apple is in business to make money off their customers. Just sayin' that though Jobs was more adept at extracting large amounts of profits from Apple's customer base, the Jim Jannard way of doing business may put him in a contradictory position with Steve Jobs instead of a comparable one. And in my opinion, in a higher position on the CEO scale.

+1 yup, Jim business model me like.

Jim once said on this board something akin to that comparing him to Steve Jobs was like "comparing a hamburger with a filet mignon".

Jannard may admire Jobs. But Jannard does not follow Jobs. (my opinion entirely, expressed as a statement, but regardless, just an opinion)

And your reason not to shoot EPIC is...?

Time. I have other things to shoot.. euh to do... ;-)
No, I was here (www.reduser.net) for a long time ago. I still follow the RSS feed (that's why I'm back to give my reason)...
But the main reason for me is money. I know, the camera will pay itself back in time, but it's just to much to start with...
Sorry, I still want this camera and I still follow your ProRes... euh progres and updates, but I don't want to jump to far.
Just keep on going and make the live and work for so many people much easier... with your nice cameras.

I can't help but wonder why Snowwhite and the Huntsman was listed. I realize a good portion of the VFX shots were filmed with the Epic, but listing it is highly deceptive considering the productions main shooting format was anamorphic. I remember when a thread was first made about it people went through the "OMG it looks like film!!" phase again. Well... That's because it is film.
I don't know too much about how it was filmed, but what surprised me was that it was shot on Kodak 5230, not 5219. The reason why I say that I'm surprised is because Kodak markets 5230 as a stock you'd use if you had tighter budget constraints. I guess the DP just likes it!

Over heating, breaking down, lack of support, burning out power outputs due to 12v, mini xlr inputs failing, poor ergonomics, annoying workflow (unless you own your own post production house like PJ - this is the same post production house that I use but because I don't own it those inconvenient hours of painful workflow can't be turned into dollars), codecs, dropped shots, dropped frames, weird glitches, poor battery performance, no off site repairs, parts made in italy that cant be fixed, camera fails 20 minutes after receiving it and needs to be sent back... etc

Nice colour space/resolution/software/kicking other companies up the butt... but its a prototype.

Heard some guy saying literally the same things about F65. Funny, huh.

Being a RED ONE and EPIC-X owner for 3 years (EPIC for 1 year) and never experimented one of those issues you mention...

Can't think of a sole reason not to shoot EPIC,except I love it too much? :)

mini XLRs? Prototype? This sounds like a parallel universe bleed-over. I'm unaware of these problems with Epic in this universe.

Black Swan
Slumdog Millionaire
Avatar (highest grossing movie ever shot on a 2/3" HD camera!)
28 days later
StarWars - Attack of the clones
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Sin City
Cloverfield
Taxes chainsaw Massacre 1
Evil Dead 1
BBC Life

All shot on lowly HD and 16mm cameras. Pleeeenty of reason i'd say.

Did that prevent me or anyone else from enjoying those movies? I think not. :- )

I still love shooting with my Epic though!

I love my scarlet but I have to agree that it's not terribly stable. I've had many a reboot to try and fix a problem. Which is fine for me. And it is awkward when you're on set trying to defend RED's reputation... and have an Epic stop booting half an hour later. That was a stage full of crew who will always remember "the day the epic died" and go back to shooting on Alexa.

And thanks to confirmation bias you're more likely to see proof of what you believe while ignoring the data to the contrary. So if you start with the belief that RED is unstable... every glitch is proof. If you think Red is stable then every glitch is an outlier to be ignored. Ditto for the converse. If you think Alexa is stable every glitch is just an exception to the rule. If you think Alexa is unstable every glitch is proof of your correctness. Human nature.

I've only ever had to restart the Scarlet for hot-swapping monitors. It's a known issue, but that's the only glitch I've ever experienced personally, knock on wood. I've never had it overheat despite constant use in 100 degree weather, never had it drop a frame or a shot, etc. I hope that continues, but I'm on v3.3 beta firmware and haven't had any problems since I installed it on day 1 of availability. I've also rented several Scarlets with no problems there either.

If you have Adobe, the forthcoming FCPX upgrade, or a lot of conversion time for FCP7, the workflow doesn't require a massive post house. DaVinci is free too... all very powerful tools. We are currently finishing a small feature without a RedRocket (slow as hell) but we also aren't having a single issue with any clips or files.
