  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cost not an Issue. Need to power HMI via Battery

Hi everyone,

I will be filming at a national forest in China.
The government policy strictly forbids any kind of engine inside the forest to preserve its air quality and its environment.
We will be filming at night, and will need about 1500 watts of power to run 2x575 and 1x200 HMI.

Besides the LibertyPak (which seems to be out of business), is their any other option for battery powered stations?
I imagine there would be lots of demand for something like this, but I just couldn't find any products that does this. Why?

Cost is not an issue.

We will be needing about 2000WH which includes the 10% efficiency lost on most inverters.
We made a 5000WH battery bank with a 3000W inverter for our last project.
It works, but was unprofessional looking, and is not that state of the art.

I was wondering if there are any companies that makes products like this who would be more sophisticated than to just throwing a bunch lead-acid together.

Regards,

Lin

Would you consider changing out the fixtures?

Use ARRI 125 and 200 HMI's with DC Ballasts. Then you can use standard block batteries such as the Anton/Bauer VCLX series.
I have used that combination plenty of times... You have choices of PAR's and Fresnel's - even a light tube for the 125 Pocket PAR.

Then add some of the new Foton lights from PRG - those will also run off a DC supply via 4 pin XLR.
Exceptional light - very climate resistant - would be perfect for what you are describing.
Here is a good source:

If that is not enough, you can always add in some daylight balanced LED's powered off of a standard camera battery (Thinking of the LitePanels 1x1 with AB battery mount).

With all of the new technologies available today, you can power everything with DC supplies and skip the inverter.

This is a case for using 6 volt batts in series rather than v-lock batts.....if you plan to shoot for any amount of time. I would wire up my own lights in this case and go with 12v lights. In fact i'd probably just go halogyn lights for $18 a light and wire up as needed. Cheap, effective and long lasting and just not complicated like using inverters etc....and no big energy startup requirements

My company manufactures poratable Lithium Polymer battery systems in Pelican cases for the military ranging from 350watts to 6400wh. PM me if you would like more info.

I would also point out that for daylight-balanced punch at low power, high-efficiency LED panels such as Nila lights and the new Hive Plasma lights are more efficient than HMIs. Nila lights can be powered from 12v and the Hive lights from 28v. A Hive 280w fresnel is equivalent in output to a 575w HMI fresnel.
