Hi everyone. I just pulled the trigger and purchased a RED Scarlet package last Friday and now just patiently waiting for it to arrive in the mail. The wait is killing me. I've been away from serious creative/film making for 7 years but am ready to jump back into it full time and I have a question for you all. I will likely for the next few months just be getting a feel for the camera and taking on small jobs, nothing major. I haven't purchased the Red Mags yet and expect to do so after the price drop. Thinking about purchasing a 256GB Red Mag. Would you suggest I go with two 128GB ones instead? Has anyone here ever had one of the mags fail? I would hate to be on a job and lose all of the footage if I had it stored on just a 256GB. But then again I think having the larger card would be great in not having to swap out so often. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hey, congratulations! You're gonna love it.

I think it's best to have more than one card, especially for offloading on site. If you only have one card you can't swap out to a different one while downloading the other. I have 4x 64GB cards and it works out great. Great to have a 3rd one to fall back on if the first 2 are still not downloaded.

Hi Samir,

Welcome to the club. Let us know if we can help you with anything.

Hi Samir,

Having multiple cards is the safer way to go and it could speed things up on set. Setting a percent limit on fill capacity is a good practice as well. That way data copy doesn't become a bottleneck. The likelihood of something going wrong with a mag is very low, but you can buy a little insurance by getting your data off the cards and backed up (2-3 copies) as soon as possible.

Have fun with your new camera!

Congrats. I'm a new owner too since June. Hope you ordered your shipment via fed ex and not DHL if you're not in the states. Not sure if they are better over there but anywhere else there are plenty of delay stories.

I have just one 256gb card and I must admit it might be tricky on shoots. We'll see how fast it fills up. I tried offloading it using firewire 800 and the mac estimated that it would take 3 hours. Think I might have to trade in my iMac 27inch for a new MBP retina with usb3 so I have something on site.

Anyhow, one card was cheaper then 2. Prices have come down but 2 cards might still make better sense.

@ Wil Wong: I had a very bad experience with Fedup – err Fedex – too, they sent my RED One from England to China instead of Germany after the audio upgrade! Took us three weeks to get it back, it was so scary.

So, whoever they are, they don't care for customers like RED does, they target shareholder value ONLY.

I hope for a better experience by our new brother Samir!

Hey Guys. Thanks for welcoming me to the community. I received my Scarlet yesterday. #2651 "Framboise" via FedEx overnight shipping (I am in the US). I am still waiting for the price drop to go in effect for the REDMAGs so I can buy 2 instead of a large one as per all of your recommendations. So I still have to exercise some patience. Looking forward to capturing some great scenes with this baby.

There are some sweet deals in the FS for two 128GBs for $2300. You'd be saving yourself $200 and get the mags two weeks (okay maybe only a week) earlier. That said, the warranty of the mags doesn't get transferred if you purchased used.

Just a thought.

the more cards the better. 2x 128's or 4x64's (i had 4x 64's) is the best bet.

With a higher data rate camera, like epic 4x 128's is minimum.
