I noticed on the epic store page it says..

"Any collection or group of items placed as a single order that includes 1x EPIC brain and totals over $50,000 in invoiced value will receive the DRAGON sensor upgrade at no charge."

is there a date this took effect? Just wanted to check and see if my epic-m collection purchase qualifies.

Chad

Seems like wishful thinking Chad IMHO, I had understood that this applies to recent / current purchases, not retrospectively for M owners right back to the start of the programme?

I was told by my Bomb Squad rep that my Epic-M wouldn't be eligible for the free upgrade, even though I spent well over $50,000. It would seem RED is penalizing early adopters. I would love some official comment.

You don't have to be negative about it. You could think of it like you get to buy the upgrade, you get to have an EPIC, you get to shoot beautiful images, you get to help perpetuate the RED.com economy, and be a member of the society that pulls his own weight instead of always looking for a handout. You could have been born with only one eye, in a third world country. Thank God you can breathe, and your heart pumps blood.

Without starting a fight, I have to tell you you're completely missing my point. I appreciate RED offering this effectively for free, but I do not understand why it only applies to newer orders. I paid the same amount of money as customers who are eligible.
I'm only looking for a handout because RED offered it. Please don't read into it any farther than that!

Well I wouldn't expect it to be the same price bracket. $50k represents a certain amount of Profit for RED on an Epic-X. Epic-Ms cost more because they cost more to make so the profit margin would be lower on $50k worth of invoices. Also if you bought an Epic-M in July or August you should expect to make $6k in rentals/shoots by the time the offer went into effect. So imagine sees the reward for early adopters as "You got it early".

This could be a rerun of the whole Stages situation again.

I paid more than the indicated amount at the end of Feb this year... so, do I get a free upgrade too?

Nope.

I'd love a free Dragon upgrade - but I'm not even considering it.

Simply, IMO, the 'free' Dragon upgrade is an incentive not to loose 'new' buyers... who may end up waiting for the Dragon upgrade... ie 'buy now & you'll receive this for no extra charge'.

At some point will the Epic brain be delivered with Dragon at current prices? or is an Epic price increase coming ?

That's my understanding of the situation :)

Which is why, after the dragon announcement, the 'free' upgrade was offered.

My presumption is, once Dragon is out there, the Epic will ship with it by default.

Could be wrong - but it would be a nightmare running 2 sensors at differing price points, IMO.

It's kind of like what car companies do. They offer discounts at a certain point to keep units selling a few months before the new models come out. Those who bought early had the satisfaction of being an early adopter of that model. So, instead of offering a discount RED is offering a free upgrade to the newer model when it arrives, as incentive to buy now for those who may be waiting to buy after the new model arrives.

It's called business.

I totally understand Elsie, just didn't know if anyone knew of the specific date in which an order qualified for the free upgrade.

I should have been more specific Chad. I was actually addressing Nick Timmon's comment about RED punishing early adopters.

To answer your question, it seems there was a post by Brent regarding the time frame or maybe I saw it in a post referencing a posting on Red.com. Check Brent's posts and work backwards a ways to see if he posted on the subject.

As an early adopted not eligible for a free upgrade, this is totally reasonable. I would also not want to buy an Epic right now knowing the Dragon sensor is 6 months away, so this keeps Epic sales going. Perfectly fair and understandable.

I will have to pay for the upgrade for my Epic-X, and I think its fair. The reason early Epic purchasers do not get the upgrade for free is because as early purchasers, we had the camera in a time frame where the panorama of competition was few and bellow in quality. When we bought it, the rules were we would have the possibility to upgrade to newer sensors (obsolescence obsolete), but we would have to pay for it. The offering of the Dragon for new purchasers is to give them a sense of security that they would not be buying an obsolete camera in a new landscape of competition and somehow "similar" offerings. This announcement was made during NAB, a time where the competition announced their plans ands showed their cards. Red announced some of the Dragon's features, and to avoid potential purchasers to hold on their purchase or to look elsewhere in fear of having something obsolete before the Return of investment is made, they chose to start this offer.

If you have purchased an M last year, then you obviously- if you had your business in place- recouped your investment. You had the cutting edge digital cinema camera for many months, one of the most requested cameras on the high end market. Now there's a lot more competition, the Epic is still one of the most requested cameras in the market and you knew the rules when purchasing it, so personally I don't complain with this Red policy. Would I like a free upgrade? Of course! But when I bought my camera I knew I had to pay for my sensor upgrade. These new buyers know they'll get one for free when they get it. Good for them!

If there's one thing I would like, however, is probably a 1000 dollars less on the upgrade price :) Sounds little but it would truly help for the independent struggling artist with the Epic!

What is the upgrade price to Dragon going to be?
