  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

USB3 to eSATA

Unless you are copying to a RAID or FLASH drive your write speeds are limited to around 110 MB/s on a 7200rpm. You do have to have external power to run eSATA or an extra usb port to provide power to the REDstation.

I've used one of those. One thing to be careful of is to make sure you get the plug on the adapter seated all the way, or it will run at USB 2 speeds.

They used an A connector on the device(which is not supposed to be done) So if its not seated, only the USB2 contacts will connect, not the USB3 ones which are deeper back in the connector.

Yeah FW800 is just way too slow. even 150mb/s is time consuming for large loads. I'm looking at USB3 or eSATA going forward, 300mb/s or faster. OWC makes a nice 2x eSATA, 2x USB3 PCIe card. Now if I have multiple REDSTATIONS uploading to my Mac Pro at the same time, do I still get the same bandwidth? Say I fill all 4, is my speed 1/4th on each station, total of 4 stations?

Good to know. I think the usb3-mini plug is a terrible design btw. Wider then it is long and seems really prone to not making contact if it's bumped. May all depend on the build quality but my Seagate Goflex drive connecter is pretty bad.

I hate the micro USB 2.0/3.0 connector. Such a poor design. Fine for charging a phone I guess, but data? They should have stopped with Mini USB, at least that was solid.

On my new Mac Book Pro with RETINA display which BTW I am waiting for... I am using both Thunderbolt ports for 2 8TB RAID array's and both USB 3.0 ports for RED readers. That way I can maximize the throughput bandwidth whilst offloading on site. In my minds eye, the cards are offloading so fast I can hardly even have breath to be breathless with, but I will find out how much of that transfers over to the real world.
