  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has this been added yet?

Ok then...when will it be added? I know we had this feature on Red 1 super early. Would be great to have.

I've been on two shows within two weeks that parts of the both requested some extensive time-lapse work. All you can tell the client is 1fps is the limit. On out last show we had to use our Red ONE B cam for the time-lapse work. Good fortune that we had that older Red which should tell us all something.

I hear what you're saying but that is such big step back from where we should be in mid-2012. If I'm going to go to the trouble to do all that I will break out the 5D. Time-lapse with a DSLR makes perfect sense if you're shooting time-exposures... for now.

I would love to see a timelapse mode in Epic sooner than later. But yeah, for now I just shoot timelapse on my 5D3. All my daytime timelapse if it doesn't have to be really long I shoot on the Epic. For night shots it can work. But it would look so much better with some longer exposure times.

Can anyone from red comment if it's going into a build in the near future?

Yes. Please, Red, some word on an intervelometer, even if it is discouraging, would be most helpful. Summer is fast approaching and some of us need to plan accordingly. Stepping back to ONE should never have been an option.

yes please! Longer shutters and intervalometer. I'm sure someone's already figured out a way to do this - is there some (automated) way, like running some kind of script, to select every 4th frame, or every 8th (etc etc, name your interval). What about adding this kind of capability to RCX, then we could just shoot at 1fps and select any longer interval needed in one-second increments. Then we could use Epic/Scarlet for timelapse and shoot at 1fps (with HDRX too!) and have the luxury of selecting any desired interval in post. Of course it would be better to have an intervalometer built in like R1....

of course there are advantages to this approach but shooting 5 or 10 times the amount you need for a time lapse is not ideal. The right control of the camera is what's needed, "fixing" it in post is not such an advantage. If your are shooting a motion control time lapse and compositing lots of takes you could end up shooting a mountain of material... and each take would have to be "time lapsed" - also time consuming. Please let's stick to getting the right controls on the camera for the camera. I will be surprised if this kind of addition appears for RCX, it's not that kind of tool.

Need to add my voice.
Time lapse used to be an option - no longer. It is an essential requirement.

The fact that the function was enabled on the RED One, albeit without long exposure capability, set a base level of expectations for the newer cameras to both operators and our clients.

Whenever I need to capture a time lapse, I think back to Jim's words - that those getting rid of their RED Ones will be sorry. Another case when he was right - reverted to using my R1 for a TL shot just yesterday. (Side note: Ah yes, that's right - need to reformat the SSD from the EPIC shoot)

But that "solution" (using the R1) has severe limitations - I often add motion in post - so I need the extra sensor landscape to make the move work and retain very high resolutions. A few years ago, that was easy: Capture with the R1 at 4K, modify in post by reframing and adding motion, deliver in HD and it worked.
Today, delivery standards have ticked up - if 2K, the manipulation window is smaller but manageable. Delivery at 4K - or protecting for archival - and the window has disappeared.

Slightly off but related: In other threads, some asked "Why 6K Dragon?" Using the above example, the 6K sensor will make reframing a time lapse in post achievable when you have a 4K deliverable.

As stated, the R1 had time lapse but not long exposure - of course we want both.
The same build should finally enable the still mode (that little feature on the REDMOTE and Side Handle) That feature should also have an external trigger function - allowing current time lapse tools on the market that work with DSLR's to be used with both EPIC's and Scarlets.

Beyond the still mode use in time lapse, I'm sure that many photographers are waiting to see the acronym DSMC become a reality from their perspective.

I'm also sure that enabling these features translates to a bit of work at RED. We know it's coming. Wish it was yesterday, hoping it will be tomorrow - can't happen soon enough. When it does, there will be many smiles.

Just to add another voice to this, from a Scarlet owner. I've spent the last couple of months shooting a timelapse film of the transformation of the ship 'The Spirit of Chartwell' into the Royal Barge for the Queen's Jubilee celebrations in the UK and ended up with a 5D mk2, a 5D mk1, a 60D and even a 40D to get stuff that would have looked a million times better on the Red. I shot as much 1fps material as I could but ultimately it was sad to be shooting something that would be a record that people would still be interested in seeing in 50 years time, and having to do it with a 40D.

I have other jobs coming up off the back of that and it would be wonderful to be able to plan a Red-workflow for it. Any updates on how this is coming along would be greatly appreciated.
