  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best Follow Focus for Canon L Lenses?

Best if you can hold some of them in your hands and see how they actually work and feel.

Listen to Les, nothing beats real world experience, you are looking to spend $1k - $4k so make sure its a fit.

Hey Terry

Thanks for the pics of the Eldercron ( is that how spell it ?) Anyway hard to tell how it works I assume the big wheel on the arm drives the lens cog. So a question, the gearbox looks bulky how much room does it take up on the rods & is it clip on clip off ?

P.S. For still glass I'm going for a left field nomination . Gini Rigs "I focus" no hard stops, fully manual, no backlash, locks to one rod, similar to Cinevate Durus with a rubber O ring on the drive cog you don't need lens gears, works similar to the Oconnor still lens FF in that respect. Whilst it ain't a Arri or an O'Connor it's rock solid & cheap.

Gotta love a lifetime warranty. Does O'Connor have warranty that good?

As some users have said here, the microFollowFocus | blue is a great unit for not only DSLR lenses, but also cinema lenses. I've used it on the hole range of CP.2's as well as Canon's 30-600mm cinema zoom, which has a really thick pull, so this follow focus will grow with you and your gear. The adjustable hard stops are especially great for creating physical stops on your L Series lenses, so that you can't spin past infinity and your marks stay true.

With backlash adjust and a lifetime warrantee, the follow focus will treat you right for years to come.

Cheers,

Loren Simons

Even the best FF can't compensate for inaccurate focussing of still picture lenses. If you want the best FF available, try Arri LFF-1. Price to match.

What about the Letus FF? Anybody got one of those that could comment?

Been using the Cinevate durus. Works well. Really does have a solid build and minimal play. A bit chunky so sometimes it is a pain to maneuver around. Michael, i'd be willing to sell mine if you were interested. Been looking to get the O-focus dm for some zeiss glass.

++ It's what I carry and never lend out...

Indeed, Paul, I have one too. They rarely come on second-hand market. I bought mine new. I love it: the size, the precision, the versatility...there are many excellent FF out there, but none that would be this tiny and so flexible as the LFF-1.

AND YOU CAN MOUNT IT ANY WAY YOU WANT!!! Top rods, bottom rods... Variable speed... Just a great unit.

Absolutely, here it is mounted on top: http://achtel.com/services.htm
What I also like about the LFF-1 is that it reduces the clutter around the lens because it is so tiny!

I think we understand you and I. Matt Trembley at RED put me on to this follow focus. Arri does do some things well. RED can destroy anything they set their sights on. For now the LFF-1 rules supreme. I would buy another just to have.

Just because something has a lifetime warranty doesn't mean it's a good product, just FYI. It may just mean the company accepts the inherent problems with the product and will fix them when they arise, instead of actually making it better.

Lifetime warranty can be a very deceiving sense of security.

As a much cheaper option, what about the Lanparte one? I heard good things about it, especially if you compare it to the RedRock or Cinevate one, and it's half the price. But maybe it's a piece of ***, I haven't used it myself yet. I'm curious about it though. Any thoughts?

While this can sometimes be true, our lifetime warranty is just reassurance that we stand behind our products for the long haul. The best kind of warranty is the one you don't have to use, not the one you don't have.

Warranty.

Warrantee is a person to whom a warranty is given, just FYI.

HMMMMMM

It seems quite clear that Arri FF systems are the cream of the crop, however because I am only looking for a follow focus for still lenses, then I think it seems a bit overkill to get an Arri FF. A lot of support for O'connor, Zacuto, and Redrock as well. Tough decisions to make

I'm going for the o connor as Red have not decided to build one of their own yet. :) I chose this because I will need the hardstops while I'm using the photo lenses. Once I switch to cine I will just change the wheel for a better ratio. The ratios things is a seller for me.
