The lenses we chose to use were the Duclos 11 16mm f2.8 shot WA zoom . . . The Duclos lens was used extensively fully wide .
Dave, I'm headed out to Little Cayman this week to dunk the Deep Epic again. In Indo I found the Tokina 11-16 to be soft at the edges when shooting wide so I switched to the trusty 10-17. I'm curious about your experience with the Dulcos version and how it may differ from the Nikon mount Tokina 11-16. What port extender did you use? Cheers, Ron

Frazier, hard to know the exact f stop, using the Optitek Nikon mount, but guessing it was f8 or greater (smaller aperture), as I was shooting at iso 800 most of the time (so closing down more than opening up). RC8 not a problem, center of image is tack sharp and it looks great!
One thing I did learn, however, was that I have to pay much closer attention to focus with the Epic/Mysterium X sensor than when I used the same lens on by Nikon D300. Depth of field is much shallower.... Typically, I could focus on one of my fins (about 4' away) and expect nice sharp images through infinity. Not so with the MX and 10-17 lens.

Hi Ron, The Duclos 11 16mm was used in a Gates Deep Epic with a 286 extender and Mineral glass dome port. The re 17 50 was used in a 486 extender with Mineral glass dome port. You can use it just with a 286 but its very close to the dome. Ive not used the stock lens so can't say if its different or good or bad. Id recon if there was some sort of magic adjustment Matt would have used it. I also don't know how they vary lens to lens from the factory, my guess is Duclos would go though a QA process so would be consistently good. Also My friend Phil taught me each lens is an individual......

Thanks Tom, no softness that I can see. The DOF is pretty shallow at 5k at f/5.6 and what you may be looking at is motion blur from tracking the dragon (the camera moves from left to right). Subject to lens distance was about 500mm, so assuming 10 micron circle of confusion, the DOF is just 70mm (3")! That is less than 1/3rd of the length of the dragon.

I tried to keep the rule of thirds, I guess that's why it looks "balanced".

I will try to put some footage together in a week or two when I have computer power to do so.

Unfortunately the ocean is like a washing machine now...so no more shooting.

Now that we 5k camera and the optics to match, focusing will be a new challenge!

Pawel: Your DeepX is a cool housing and I wouldn't mind shooting it on my next feature - I'm sure there are a couple shots that would benefit from a slightly smaller housing,

Is Pawel's DeepX currently the smallest underwater housing for the epic?

How fast do those jetboots go? They look so small, could they be faster than fins?

It was awesome being underwater off Maui surrounded by whales and have Jason zoom past with his jet boots on. They call him Marine Boy!

Yes, it is. At 4.5kg (10 lb), it is less than half weight of other housings. Or, you can connect two together ...with different lenses on each.
It can be taken as carry on luggage on a plane...with the camera, battery, monitor and lens...all under 10kg (22 lbs).

Some very beautiful shots Jon. Well done and thanks for sharing.

Have been doing some TVC pool stuff with my Deep Epic but this was the first real open ocean test footage. Quick and dirty cut, conditions weren't great, vis on the wreck was 5-7m, Fish Rock was better at 15m vis but the depth was reasonably deep at about 30m. I am going to sound like every other guy with a Red but the vimeo thing just doesn't do it justice. I watched it on a 2K projector and it looked flippin awesome..... and that is at half res.
