  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Looking for a car mount solution

How far? Our Panther Multimount I believe has 18 or 24 inch rods and is as solid as a tank.

This is what I used from filmtools, but for the Scarlet I will buy a high hat, an extra suction mount with rods and also two safety straps that clip under hood. Just buy rod extenders and you can stick the camera out in front of light.

Another lateral solution I would consider....that would give me more options as an added bonus, would be the car mounted on a trailer with camera on board the back of ute/pickup or some sort tow arrangement. I reckon by the time you hire a rig for the requirement you could most probably hire a trailer & ute for less.

I guess this also comes down to speed of the car. High speed would be terrible but if you want something smooth & elegant then maybe. Also if you require road in foreground this solution will not work.

PS. In a previous life I have done a lot of car TVC's.

⬆ What Mike said. If thats not an option, 3 suction cups and magic arms work for a 5d, you will get some vibration/shake even on smooth surfaces. (A ratchet strap helps remove a little vibration)

You'll need some pretty heavy duty grip to rig a Scarlet tho.

The options you list are maybe? fine for a 5D with minimum weight issues.

However for a kitted Scarlet this system will not work, particularly as you described hanging the camera in front of the car (for that headlight shot) Suction cups can only be mounted on flat surfaces there are none on the front of a car. Hence your using the arms to extend from the bonnet or sides down & out to put the camera in position. This system may work on a flat straight road @ slow speeds ........go over a bump or start going into turns.... its your camera.

Another option is mechanical, if it's not a new car, take the bumper off or bolt on to the bumper a rig supported by safety/tension straps. However I seem to remember you had some nice shots of new mercs on another thread some maybe this option is great ; ). HECK To be safe maybe just hire a MOE kit & a good grip.

P.S. Those fantastic "Fat" Top Gear shots which I think you may be after, from memory are all car to car shots.

You could mount the camera on the hood with a long lens, and use rods to suspend a wide angle mirror out in front of the car.

Hey Tod,

Interesting idea, not sure about the vibration of the mirror, would it be a problem ?
