Okay, absolutely LOVING using R3Ds seamlessly in Premiere and After Effects. Fantastic!

Can anyone think of a way to do 4-6 R3Ds as a multicam without transcoding first?

Guess I would need an incredibly fast RAID and an army of Red Rockets.

Still a pipe dream at this point?

Up to now I've been transcoding to ProRes for multicam and relinking after the edit.

Works great but it will be a very happy day indeed when I can skip that step.

In CS6 I can do 8 streams of R3D realtime in multicam with a 600MB/s RAID.

Hey Steve,

Thanks for the reply, that's very encouraging!

Any further details? System, Rocket, settings, performance?

Any tricks you can share?

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Not too far off a pipe dream at all. I'll try and shoot a few streams of footage off today for you and throw it in a Multicam sequence to show you how it goes without a Red Rocket :)

Cool, thanks guys. My first test choked on 4 streams at 1/8th. Quadro 4800, Rocket, Mac Pro Hex Core with 16GB RAM, straight SATA drive which is probably the bottleneck.

Any further advice greatly appreciated.

Hey Jim,

Just did some tests for you expecting my discs to keep up but they did not! I'm on an internal RAID Array (Not particularly fast - maxes out @300MB/Sec sequential read). A single SATA drive will definitely be your bottleneck I think. After doing some very rough testing with 4K 6:1 R3D's, it looks like each stream wants about 50MB/sec. Does anyone know what the actual datarate on a 4k 6:1 R3D would be?

Also worth keeping in mind is that the storage system must be able push through the required amount of data in a non-sequential way. What I mean by that is that since you are using multiple R3D's, your disc system is needing to read all of them simultaneously from different areas of the disk. For solid state drives, this isn't a problem since they have no moving head and can just pull the data where they need it. For conventional HDD's however, having the head of the drive attempt to read from multiple areas on the disc at the same time can really slow your read speeds down.

Having said that, I think if you managed to get your disc system up to speed, you wouldn't be far off from real-time playback of 6 streams. I managed 4 when I moved the 4th r3d to a separate drive, but I only "just" managed that.

Being that you already have a RedRocket and are on a hex core machine, I would be optimistic :)

On another note (possibly to Steve), while testing out the multicam viewer, I realised that it has no options for playback resolution. However, if you scale the actual multicam viewer larger, it seems to begin debayering at higher resolutions once you hit a particular size. I was tipped off to this by the dramatic change in CPU usage once enlarging the viewer. Upon investigating it further by eye, it seems I can definitely notice a difference in the resolution of the debayer at particular viewing sizes. I guess my question would be if we could have some more info on the way that resolution works inside of the multi-cam viewer? Would there be a way to allow us to choose the resolution it uses manually?

THanks Brad, that's great research! I'll keep experimenting on this side.

Sven, I've done Multicam for 10 years as well but it's always been with ProRes, where I can make it work on one or two drives, but R3Ds are a very different beast and between the file throughput and the need to debayer, there are a few things at play.

There is currently no way to manually specify an exact resolution in the multicam monitor. The resolution is selected automatically based on the window size and how many of the pixels you would end up seeing anyways.

Steve,
Can the 'contents' of the multi-cam monitor be sent out
through the mercury transmit so we can see the multi-cam
on an a broadcast monitor.

i.e output your 8 streams to a large plasma for clients to review while editing

Thanks Steve - really appreciate you taking the time to reply on the forums :)
