  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fast would mean thunderbolt, but it requires power so being mobile is tough. Or have enough media to cover the day and offload in the hotel later. At this point most people are using a laptop connected to external drives solution. Not really portable but I get to review the footage before I format any cards.

I wonder if I could build a small rugged setup that used a cube like computer with a small 9inch screen and battery all mounted inside a box?

If there is a Nexto with an ESATA input (I think I heard something about this)

You could do that.

Or, you could easily build a small cube computer and install Shotput pro on it.

I'm running the LaCie thunderbolt to esata hub. Can dump a RED 64gb SSD to a external drive in 8 minutes and about 4 minutes to my macbook pro's SSD. Highly recommend it. Only down side is that the hub requires power.

The nexto type devices are sometimes called 'digital wallets'.
I agree, we need this type of gadget. No external computer, no thunderbolt either.
The digital wallet has a slot on the top for the RED Mag ssd. Inside the wallet is a commodity SSD , say a 256GB Samsung 830 , now about $240.
The wallet copies the Red sata SSD to the wallet SSD at up to 400 MB/sec.
If you need more storage, use a 4TB hard drive, slower but bigger. The whole thing would be the size of a paper back book.
Pricing part of the equation : Newegg has Sata to Sata cloner gadgets for $50 or so. You can use this to clone off a RED mag to a cheap SSD today, but it can not do more than one copy as it is a cloner and not a general backup device. But still, $240 per SDD for backup can be workable for some. Needs DC power for field operation.

Trouble is that digital wallet companies don't care about minuscule markets like RED users.
In the old days (yea I know not that long ago) I used a nexto CF reader like this:

to copy all my r3d files from the R1 CF recorder.

how can I get that same easy to use product for the Epic SSD?

Need a way to make offloading as easy as a dslr with my Epic.

ANyone know how?

Still have to have a laptop with this.....not what I am looking for. I want a "wallet" on my belt I can pop in an SSD and hit "go" and it makes a copy just like all the units do for CF cards etc...

I brought up the subject of a large nexto like device for field-offloading to Jarred at NAB. He said they were already working on it.

Okay,
I emailed NextoDI to ask them about this, Barry from NextoDI called me back to let me know that they love the idea. They are preparing a new device soon and they are meeting within a few days to see if they can adapt it to the REDmags (or at least the RED Station). Also, they have some issues with playing back on the device itself, but it should be able to safely copy the files on 2 drives.
Let's wait and see...
He also asked me to give you guys his email in case you have any ideas/questions – Barry Morrill: barry@nextodiusa.com

I love Nexto's products and have been working safely with them on various workflows. This could be a great alternative to the full DIT workstation.

Excellent to hear - thank you Victor. We've relied on our Nexto DI Extremes for years and they have never once let us down. We were truly not looking forward to going back to working through a laptop.

I can second that. I even made a mockup early this year, where Jarred confirmed that something similar is in the works. I depicted a portable station with which you can copy onto 1 or 2 2.5 HDD for backups. Really will be great to have for safety and might also be saving a bit on the amount of needed SSD mags ;)

Our Nexto has been dropped six times and stills works without issue - has not failed one (and ours has spinning drive in it!).

I want this - and don't need/want video screen, just please let me copy reliably and as fast as possible, with as low a price as possible (we could have 2 on set, in case one is lost/damaged, and also to let someone take one home at the end of the day).

I see some real demand, someone needs to make this asap.

Hi this is Barry from NextoDI USA and as Victor said, please email me or post needs suggestions etc. I will forward them directly to NextoDI 's design team

I apologize for sending you an email. I may have gotten excited that someone is thinking of making exactly what I've been dreaming about.

So true! I don't want to stress you Nexto-guys - but hurry up ;-)

Cheers
Thomas.

Zac: No problem! I had Victor post my email address because I am out this week without alot of login time & I wanted the feedback, I also heard back from the design team, they have something already :
From the firmware version V1.50, every NVS can copy RED SSD through RED station.
The RED station can be connected to NVS1501/2501/2500 through USB2.0 host, so the copy speed is rather slow(27MB/s, 1GB in 1 min).
NVS2525 can connect the RED station through eSATA.
In this case, the copy speed is 90MB/s(5GB in 1min),
RED station needs more power than NVS can provide, so you need power adapter for RED station when connecting with NVS.
