I was shooting some timelapse with a 1/2 second exposure, using a black shade for that long exposure. Then I switched over to some 'normal' exposure and also tried some of the new 120 fps . The problem is that I forgot to switch the black shade back to the normal one. The result was some fixed pattern noise on the higher speed shots. Lucky for me I did shoot some of my own black field so I was able to post process black shade to almost completely remove the crud.

So is there a way the camera can auto select the best black shade for the current settings?

Or a way to select black shading without wading into many menus ? Can presets do it ?

I am interested in knowing what everyone has to say about this because I blackshade and usually set it normal and it does it's job.

Yep, the issue I had was a black shade for long 1/2 sec exposure, and forgetting to switch to the factory black shade for normal 24fps stuff.
The Red should really have several black shades on the SSD, and select the right one for you.
' loading black shade , please wait .... ' would be what I should see when I switch exposures.
Or even a warning : ' black shade out of range for exposure. '

Agreed. I believe I read somewhere that Red will release a more intelligent black shade system--sorry I can't be more helpful, but something more helpful is definitely coming.

A programmable semi-automatic option would be very convenient. I'd like to be able to save calibrations for interior (normal, custom) and exterior (normal, custom), switch between INT and EXT settings and have the camera auto-select the proper calibration based on current shutter speed.

Really, though, the better option would be to cut the calibration time down to minutes (single digits) so operators can address unique situations without slowing down production.
