  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I thought I'd contribute to the super moon craze with a bit of 5K action, this was with a canon 100-400mm zoom on a1.4x extender at 5K 12:1

When it's low on the horizon sure. Same reason sunrise and sunset are orange.

it was actually a fruit bat i think, they fly past my house every night at dusk, except for that night lol....i was praying for a big flock of them.
 
NICE. Is the Canon 100-400mm f1.4 one of the better lenses out there for filming the moon this close?

Thanks for contributing this moon footage. I was hoping someone was shooting 5k that night.
 
What's the frame look like in 5k? Did you happen to shoot both resolutions?

How did the histo look? Was the shot underexposed because of the nature of the scene? I'm assuming these blacks are a bit?

These guys are right, that fruit added so much more to that shot. A whole bunch of them would have been priceless.

Does the 100-400 have IS or did you have to smooth this footage a bit in post?

hey will, not f1.4 unfortunately, an aperture this wide is very very rare on a zoom lens that range...if it even exists at all, the 1.4 referred to the focal length extender i had on it, the lens itself is a f4-5.6 variable :/

the histogram was actually not to bad, when i shot 5K in 96 frames it was underexposed a lot with the noise bar at full. but down to 25fps you could choose a nice exposure towards the highlights. i shot 5K ws and 2K ws. and the image in 5K is stunning, at two 2K it becomes a bit fuzzy cause the lens really looses sharpness and quality at such an extreme focal length.
 
I'm sure some noise trouble would come up between FPS changes if you don't blackshade. I have that trouble the other day. Did you BS, shooting 5k to start and a new BS with the switch to slow-mo 2k?

I was shooting 300fps shots of whitewater and black rocks looked like flies were swarming them; noisy. If I BS on the switch to 2k, hopefully that issue would have never come up, but I didn't make the time this round. I was out shooting for 5k content, the 2k stuff at 300fps was opportunistic. I'd like to see if it can be saved by crushing.

That's funny, I have been thinking about this magical zoom/super fast lens for the past few days. A little too extraordinary, my mistake, thanks for the clarification.

Image stabilisation in the lens does not usually help when on a tripod - in fact it should generally be turned off as it can hunt and introduced image movement even when the camera is locked off on a solid mount!!

Post stabilisation can help with slight wobble due to wind gusts.
