  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim any chance Red will Resurrect the 3K Scarlet ?

IMHO I really dont see this happening. Responding to BM with a competing proSumer camera would be following BM's lead. Red, if nothing else always likes to lead the pack...that's what keeps Jim and Jarred psyched to drive the company.

The 3K Scarlet concept no longer aligns with the RED brand. It would be a step back for RED, and Jim, Jarred and the crew are only interested in what's ahead of them, not behind.

Reds reasons for canning the 3k camera are even more valid today. If you want a dedicated 3k I'm sure the other guys will fill that void soon enough. In the meantime RED are busy solidifying the future with Dragon.

red has stated numerous times their decision to deliver 4k and beyond. that's it.

i don't think they are interested in competing with blackmagic's camera. and why would they? if that's what you want - get it. or just shoot your red in 3k windowed mode...

I posted a little while ago about RAW being more important than 4K... maybe I was wrong.

The Scarlet Fixed was *such* an attractive product at an interesting price point... maybe the way forward is to tweak the lens a bit, stretch the sensor a bit, and make a 4K camera of it... I'd buy that.

But I concur, it's not something RED are likely to do.

Dude, I respect your enthusiasm, but this question gets asked every week or two. It's getting boring. Why would he want to be come Sony or Panasonic and start competing for $3k cameras now? RED is not about to engage in a race to the bottom. The future is 4K and above, not a 3K camcorder.

RED is NOT Apple, and is not about abandon its pro mission and go all consumer on our ass.

RED is about being able to make the greatest movies possible..yes...at a price that doesn't make film making an oligarchy anymore.

But that's totally different than being sold at Best Buy.

For the love of God, lets just drop it already. Shoot at 2K on your Scarlet and dream of what could have been, and then come back to the light, to the present, and keep walking.

ok cool. Just curious Ray, what are you currently shooting on?

Ha Ha !! No problem Bob, you'll know better the next time !
Seriously though Bob it was just a call for Jim to either say yea it's on the table or not.
But like Peter says it's probably not going to happen as Red likes to keep their cards close to their chest.

Ray,

Directly from Jim:

Scarlet is now a professional camera. It will be more expensive. And there will be no discounts for RED ONE owners.

That is all the bad news there is...

Jim

If you were expecting 3K for $3K... this is bad news.

Jim

No one will be disappointed if they ignore all previous conceived notions.

Jim

And it goes on and on ...... Pretty self explanatory to me. But maybe Jim will respond ......

Hi Bob !
For Corporate stuff we use the AJ-HPX2000 and HVX200's, we have also used XD-Cams (1080p is usually fine for web and corp stuff)
For shorts and any tv stuff we hire most of our cameras.
I'm looking at purchasing a Scarlet, but to be honest the combination of a 3K Scarlet and higher end 4K-5K Scarlet would
be the ideal package.
It would also make me more inclined to purchase a 3K scarlet and upgrade or add a 4K Scarlet later
This is why the Blackmagic Camera is so attractive as a second (B) camera.

It kinda makes sense, you have three Red cameras aimed at different markets 3-10K 10-20K and 25-50K+

Also when you buy a Red Camera you are buying into their accessories and workflow. If Red looses this market to Blackmagic
who's to say Blackmagic wont produce a 4K S35 camera next year ? making it even easier for customers to justify upgrading to it as
you already own their 2.5K model.

I think you have a camera you are loooking for in Blackmagic then....but as many have pointed out in numerous threads for over a year...red has been clear about no 3k scarlet--i doubt any more threads will change there mind on this one.

Think RED = Highend image capture, thus Scarlet starts out 4K and will be UP-gradable. Leave the DOWN-grades and lower prices to the other companies who want to help bring that part of the market demographic closer to a 4K standard. There is room for many camera companies out there -just pick one that is producing a product within your desired parameters.

Ray. a better question to ask is, "Will the little Black Magic camera come out with a model to compete with Scarlet? Not the other way around. Or ask, "Will Red come out with a camera that competes with Phantom frame rates?" (Jarred has already said if you want 1000 fps, buy a Phantom, so the answer to that is also probably no.
